New Defender, is it custom???

1585 Views 33 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Shootin' Shane
Hip-hip-hooray! I just put a new Defender in lay-a-away and it is unlike any I've ever seen. It is two-tone (the frame and beavertail grip safety are blackened) and it has all of the XS parts (sights, hammer, beavertail and ambi safety). Unlike other XS's, the trigger is aluminum instead of the three-hole plastic trigger. This dude is awesome! It will look great as soon as I put some regular grips on it. I doubt it is an older one because the trigger is the same one they are putting on these new 1911's. Has anyone seen one of these before? Is it custom or something new? Thanks, Shane.

I'm looking forward to finding out what you have- I don't know myself.

I'm picking up a standard Defender this Thursday and want to make sure what you have isn't something currenly in the pipe-line.

This sounds wild, I've got to know more about this one. I just bought a used, like new Defender, the XS style with Novak style sights, extended thumb safety and extended beavertail grip safety. Can't wait to pick it up, but may have to get one of these too! Tell us more about it, model number etc. when you pick it up Shane.

Great, now I have to explain to my wife why I not only want (er, NEED) a Commander to keep my Gov'mnt company, but a Defender as well.

I gotta stop coming to this forum....

Yep. And I just swore to my wife that I was done buying guns for awhile. I couldn't let this Defender get away, though. What I don't understand is that it sat on the dealer's shelf for a few weeks and nobody snapped it up.
As I recall, the last Colt flyer, or magazine, that I saw showed some type of a tactical Defender to be offered. I believe they were all black finished though, with night sights. Never saw one and didn't know any were produced. If the slide is still stl w/polished flats it wouldn't fit. Witht the black frame, maybe it's something they started and then backed off and didn't finish. Just a thought.

HEY GUYS:GUNNUTS HERE,Somebody call CINDY!!!! Quick!this sounds like just what I've been looking for.
Sounds like a great gun. Does the dealer know if it was a factory made gun or was customized by someone else? Pics!!

I'll be glad to post some pics as soon as I pick it up. The dealer said he just ordered a Defender and it came straight from his distributor this way, factory fresh. He had never seen a two-tone either. Where is Mark, the Colt guy? He should something know about this gun. Shane
Hey SS.....
Does your new Defender have the upswept beavertail with the "speed bump" or the downswept beavertail that is flat?
Regards,
Sam
It is the upswept beavertail with speedbump. It has all the XS Colt competition parts on it. The trigger is the newer style that is coming on the XSE's, though.

Sounds to me like you got a new, older production gun that may have been a special makeup for a distributor. That would be my guess. If that is the case, you have a rare pony. I have never seen a Defender in the configuration as described.

Call Colt at 1-800-962-COLT on Monday and give customer service your serial number. They will be able to tell you when it was made, how many were made, and what distributor it was made for. Let us know what you find out.

(I'll bet it's not a recent gun and probably 1998 or '99 production.)

Sam

Well, the mystery is solved. I picked up my Defender today and tried to contain myself as the dealer pulled out the box. It came in a Colt Custom Shop blue cardboard box with the white outer sleeve. The box reads "Custom Colt Defender" Model-07000DZ. The serial number is DR18XXX. This is definitely a custom job. All parts seem hand-fitted and the slide/frame fit is perfectly smooth but is tight with no wiggle. Thanks for all the responses, maybe now someone can really tell me about this gun, like when it was made and how many. I'll post pictures as soon as I'm able. Thanks, Shane
umm..my XS GM has an aluminum trigger too, stock.

If it came from the Custom Shop it was built per the original customer's preferences and therefore not mass-produced in that configuration. I bet it is one nice piece indeed! Not to be nosey, but what did it cost ya used??

Yes, sir but the aluminum trigger wasn't used on Defenders and somehow ended up on this one. The main thing that is unique about this Defender is that it is two-tone.

WOW! Very NICE Defender. It looks like you have a very special Colt. Call Colt and ask them what you you have. Let us know.
