I've gone to a couple of matches and shot Sportsman (no holster, no draw) and now I want advice...

Funds are limited. Should I buy a holster and start learning to draw, or should I spend my money on a progressive reloader and learn how to hit?

The reloader, learn to shoot small groups (meaning something like 6" or so) at 12 solid paces.
Learn to do it ALL THE TIME. This is going to take ammo, lots and lots of ammo. Buy some of Uncle Mike's new Keydex stuff. A holster(belt type) and two double magazine holders will set you back $60-$65. These will serve you perfectly for speed steel and IDPA competition.

Master SAFE GUN HANDLING and basic marksmanship. You will see your speed improve along with your marksmanship skills. Have fun and BE SAFE!!

Thanks for the replies... My limited experience has already taught me you can't miss fast enough to post a good time and I knew I had to practice more. It's just that the draw seems to be half the game to me. Unfortunately, everyone I saw at the shoots I went to was sporting one of those $200 skeletonized magnetic holsters. There was no way I could afford one of those and a progressive too. I'll check the Uncle Mikes stuff out.

I hear you on the addiction JB. I can see this thing costing me a bunch in the near term. Hell, just the powder and primer is going to hurt.

I just got one of the Uncle Mike's kydex holsters for under 20 bucks. I got it for the 1911, then I found my Hi Power fits in there as well. Not bad, two guns in one holster.
I also use the Uncles Mike's kydex mag holder for the Browning. I have one on order for the 1911 mags.
I use these rigs in IDPA, and they work very well for me.

The steel shooting I'm talking about is a five plate drag race... there is no moving from place to place, barriers or anything like that. Here's a link:
http://www.steelshooter.org/

The pistol I'm using is a Colt Government Model that I'm guessing is from the 40-50's. My Grampa was a bullseye shooter and he had a 3/8" tall Patridge front sight silver soldered on and added a nice Millet adjustable rear. With that tall front sight none of the Kydex holsters I've seen will work. There's too much sentimental value in Grampa's shooter for me to change the sights. Anyone know of an inexpensive holster solution? Gotta be inexpensive, I've been pricing progressive reloaders!
