The amazing thing is that I live in CA.

I just found out you can still build up a lower if it's on the "off list" and it has certain parts, such as a magazine that is 10 rounds and that is held in but requires a tool to load. Such at a tip of a bullet.

I can now sell of my Mini 14.

The world of AR accessories like pistol grips (especially the Ergo grip), lights, forends, Eotechs are now mine!

There is a God.

I'm sure they'll close this down in a year or two. But I gots to get mine in for the zombies, or inevitable riot.

Where it has been demonstrated that the police is understaffed and not able to protect the individual.

Thus, the individual must be responsible to defend themselves.

Welcome to the club! :D
You've just obtained one of the most versatile, customizable, and fun firearms in existance. Did I mention fun? lol
I've got 4, one in .308, the rest in 5.56.
Before you go spending thousands of dollars buying every hang on device for your rails (if yours has them), remember that not all of them are necessary, and all will add weight to your weapon, and the money can also (probably) be better spent on extra mags and ammo!
Enjoy! :)

Magazine lock thing

Its my understanding that if you want to have removable magazines, you can do it as long as there is no pistol grip. There's a guy that makes grips for the AR that are technically not pistol grips - he does it for the CA crowd. Just something you might want to consider - being able to change magazines in a zombie situation might come in handy. :)

No need for that. That's for the uninformed crowd. Pistol grip is OK if you have the "bullet button", thus requiring a "tool" to remove the magazine.

Can you suggest an AR upper with the following parameters:

I want something accurate 16-20 inch barrel.

Between a light and heavy barrel

With rail on top to add a HK style fron sight in the circle guard

I guess chromed lined barrel unless something else is better.

My purposes are to accurately plink and home defense, so bottom line reliability is a must.

Any brands to focus on in particular are appreciated.

Right, but how fast can you change magazines if you have to push a button with the tip of a bullet? Where do you get the bullet? I can change magazines in a second, easy. Just a thought.

Lots of people think Colt is the best. I don't know - I've been issued Colt and FN guns, and never had a problem that wasn't magazine related. I've got a Noveske - just got it a couple days ago actually - and I don't anticipate having any reliability problems with it.

I suggest doing some searching - Google would work, but I can save you a second by referencing a few sights that have some experienced members that talk a lot about the AR type guns. www.ar15.com www.m4carbine.net www.10-8forums.com

What you will probably glean is that Colt, LMT, Noveske are all great guns. Also, for home defense, where you'll only need to fire a few rounds, anything should work. The S&W M&P series have good value.

Just my $0.02

^^^ Great advice.

I agree that if you want to know about AR's/M4gery's...those are the websites to visit.

You say you're looking for an upper...are you looking for a complete upper or are you looking to build one?

I've been bitten by the M4gery bug myself...but i'm gonna build one from stripped recievers.

I like the VLTOR upper, but there are so many different choices in configurations that it's almost mindblowing to make decisions.

Del-ton, Stag, CMMG, Rock River Arms, DPMS, Bushmaster, Noveske and of course LMT.

As always, it all comes down to how much money you want to spend.

I guess I'm looking for a complete upper.

As far as changing mags is concerned. I'm not even thinking about it. Just still trying to get over the fact that I can have one.

I'll worry about devising a tool to change mags later. Already have in mind a pin that is attached to the triggerguard on a lanyard. It's always there and I don't need a bullet tip. Just grab it and use it.

Besides, irrelevant now. I'm just trying to build it. My shotgun will fine do for home defense in the meantime.

The AR is for when the zombies come. Or, if there's a riot here in Cali. Wait, wait, there's never any rioting here. This is utopia.:biglaugh:

Dude....

I hate to sound like a curmudgeon, but I have 2 suggestions.....

1) Assuming your Mini-14 is grandfathered or otherwise legal in factory form, keep it.

2) Move out of Cali.

What you propose in building an AR is a compromise. What you propose building it for is a situation in which compromise is not an option (in your words, "Zombies" or "riots").

Don't sacrifice something perfectly functional that you have now for something inferior in functionality (in the situation that you describe) simply because you "want it".

If you're looking for a complete upper I would strongly consider LMT. Thats Lewis Machine and Tool. They are excellent quality and reasonable prices. You can get cheaper, but quality will probably be a tradeoff.

If you read my other post, you'll see I can't/won't move out of CA because of ailing parents. They won't move and I have to take care of them, so I won't move.

Any suggestions for an upper for my thread question is appreciated. Keeps the post on track you know.

Also, when there is no law in troubled times, as there has been evidenced, then you'll be able to put the mag button in and use hi caps.

The police have been sued numeruos times for not responding in emergency situations. Even in normal situations when they are short staffed. NO case has ever been won. The reason is because legally, the police don't have to respond. They are legally there to provide a general deterence presence.

In troubled times when the law isn't there, you have to be able to take care of yourself.

This has been seen time and again here. As a person who had been through the King riots, when the police drove by, they said, be safe, and drove on as we were outside of a business that we were cleaning up, all strapped.

OK, now back to the main question, can you help me with a complete upper?

Also, gets me an AR for when I move. Thanks other members who have helped me with info and stayed on track.

"Zombies"...or maybe the "night seekers" in the movie "I Am Legend."

Either way, they need large amounts of little fast bullets sent their way...but I digress.

Going back to the upper...

1. What barrel length do you want?
2. Do you want a carry handle- A2, removable carry handle- A3, flat top M4?

I agree that the LMT is a good quality upper, but then there are also uppers out there that are over 1k. How much money do you want to spend?

The list could be longer, but this will give you some sort of idea.

Thanks, this give me some research material.

I'm going to stay at 16 inches, no muzzle break or flash supressor, full rail, an accurate shooter built to last. No worry about carry weight. This is a safe to range to safe rifle or stay at the castle rifle.

I built mine from parts and it works lovely. Think hard about what you'll really use it for, I could have saved well over 1000 if I did on my first build, but it still kicks major ass. I really dig the Ergo grips, and have two of them. Either way, just get an AR, or plenty more, and enjoy. You can have as much or more fun with a $700 build than a $2000 build.:)
