Hey guys, saw one today, need some info. Stainless, says COLT MK IV Series 80 on one side, COLT GOVERNMENT MODEL on the other. Serial # SS51333. Looks to be in great shape, BUT... tag says $759??? Any idea as to when it was made, and appropriate value for it? (BTW, this is the same shop that had the ridiculous price of $359 on the FEG 9mm... it's still sitting there, but it's down to $250 now.)

Colt pre-Enhanced Series 80 Government. That price was considered steep a few years ago, but these days a lot of folks are asking that much for it. If the thing is MINTY then I'd say it's a good gun to get. I have one myself, and it's a sweet-shooting firearm.

It should have regular fixed sights, no ambi safeties or beavertails, and either black checkered wood or rubber wraparound grips to be considered stock.

. As DSK said, if it's in good shape grab it. The one I had was a fine pistol.

One question to DSK: The pistol I'd bought NIB was stamped "MK IV SERIES 80 ENHANCED" and did indeed have a beavertail with the commander hammer. Any ideas as to the variation from what you described?

The Enhanced models were introduced in 1992. Colt used a Gold Cup-styled slide on ALL their 1911s except for the M1991A1. The new slide had angled serrations and a flat rib on top. The Enhanced guns also had a paddle-style grip safety and a pronounced undercut to the trigger guard/front strap junction.

Personally, I much prefer the pre-Enhanced guns on the basis of looks.

D, it looks like the pic you posted on Tripod, except it's the wraparound rubber grips. So now I gotta find $750... sheesh. I can't afford hangin' with you guys...

From your original description I'd just thought that the MK IV had "evolved" during production.

Is there a Colt you DON'T own... yet?

Unless you don't like the front cocking serations, I'd say get a new XSE for in that price range.

We usually sell those guns in the 500-600 rang, but it will vary by area of course.

I don't have a Series 70, nor do I have any XS/XSE/1991 Colts. Actually, the most recent one I own was made in 1988. I've had three different M1991A1s in the past, but they were all eventually sold or traded off.
