Do they exist? Probably not as a universal concept. But how do you define the perfect mag pouch. Here are some criteria. Feel free to add any that I missed:

- Method of attaching to the belt. For me it should be a snap/clip on type so I don't have to unthread my belt. It should also be secure enough so it doesn't come unclipped if if hit a door frame, or car door, etc. I have two Wilson Combat leather snap on mag pouches that are easy on/off, but can come unsnapped if I run into something. I also have two Blade-Tech mag pouches. They snap very easily and securely on the belt via a unique snap mounting system. It can be adjusted to the belt size and does not sway for and aft like the WC pouches. Unfortunately, they system is WAY overbuilt and the overall package is HUGE (see below).

- Securely hold magazines. I prefer my mags to stay inside the pouch when shaken (hard) upside down. It takes a firm grasp and pull to get them out when I'm reloading, but I know that they won't fall out during vigorous physical activity. My WC pouches hold the mags securely but failed the "shake and drop" test. As for the Blade-Tech's, when I received them, they were adjusted way too loose for my WC 47D mags. I tightened them to where I felt they were secure enough and the kydex from one of the screws cracked horizontally from the screw out to the edge of the pouch. So far I haven't been satisfied with the security of either of these.

- Size and concealability. The Blade-Tech mag pouch is HUGE. I almost wanted to get a dremel tool and shave off all of the unnecessary kydex. That being said they are exremely secure on the belt. The WC's are smaller, but becauses of the looser fit of the leather loop, they do not pull the mag as close to the body as possible.

So where do you place the greatest priorities with your pouches? How tight do you run your pouches (and have any ever fallen out)? What is the best pouch you've found and why?

Kydex versus leather (just mag pouches, not holters!)? How do the metal clip attachments work?

What is the perfect mag pouch? And what are your criteria? (I'm sure I'll think of a few more by tomorrow....)

Hi JacRyan,

There are a variety of excellent magazine pouches out there. Our favorite is the Ky-Tac MP-1 (click to see image). They attach easily to the belt via the Ky-Tac Anchor Loop, and remain utterly secure until purposely removed. Retention is adjustable to the level you want it- you can make them pass your shake and drop test. As for size, they are very compact and reveal most of the mag body to allow for quick and easy retrieval.

Our priority for mag pouches is that they are practical for carry, while keeping up with the performance of wide-open competition gear. We generally run the retention tight enough to hold a mag upside down. It retains well enough for carry and training, and is fast enough for competition. Obviously, we are enamored with kydex, but one person's standard of perfection is always different from the next.

I like the Sparks #34 double mag pouch. They no longer catalog it, but will make it on request. It snaps to the belt with two heavy-duty snaps. It is very compact for a double mag pouch. The pouch holds the magazines facing in opposite directions, so the pouch may be worn either on the belt normally or flipped around and place beneath the belt (outside the trousers) and the front mag is still properly "bullets-forward".

As to the issue of mag pouch fit on the belt. I think a bit of fore & aft sway is not necessarily a bad thing. After all, we are drawing the magazine with our less dexterous hand and a bit of sway may help prevent binding.

Hey Jac... If the WC pouch you have is like mine, and you're unhappy with it, email me, I'd like to get it.

My WC pouch is one of the nicest I have. The Contour is just right, and mine holds the mags nice and high, and fairly tight.

You can tighten the fit by soaking with water, and letting it shrink as it dry's.

If Leather is a preference, consider Safariland's version, they also fit well, and keep the mags close to the body.

A number of models offer Tension Adjustment's that should help them pass your "Test".

I have two Sparks, one being a single (S-4C) and a double (D-4C) pouches and think they are great. I have yet to dislodge one on a door or other obstacle, althoug I try to avoid running into door jambs. www.miltsparks.com

A friend has their #17 mag pouch that rides outside the belt like the S-4C and D-4C pouches, but is a little cheaper. My frien likes his a lot. None of these three mag pouches have any problem with mag retention.

What you really might like is one that that rides between the belt and pants or inside the pants. Marks has an inside the belt single mag pouch that should work fine and keep from getting dislodged. It is their IPS mag pouch, complet with sweat guard.

I am perfectly happy with my Blade-Tech mag carrier. THe Tek-Lok feature was a great idea.

I also really like my Galco DMC, double mag carrier. Comfortable, secure, easy on/off. I know Galco is not a full "custom" name. Even though their gear sure works great for me.

Small, snap tab is integrated with the rest of the leather. It's not "attached." Adjustable tension, no "clips" or springs. Compact. Secure. Reliable.

I'm carrying for defense. It's not a fashion show.

Any my friend Joe comes off the top rope to pour salt in my wounds...

I actually didn’t go to the European Nationals as I was sent to Idaho to fight fires for two weeks. It was not as much fun as shooting an international match, but very rewarding. 3,000 gallons of red goop out the back of a C-130 in four seconds is something to behold.

You can guess why I am at a keyboard and not at the US nationals.

Yet another reminder of why we need to appreciate and thank all those who serve our country in uniform. Duty before all else, and if any of you know Tom, shooting IS all else. Although Ground Zero is a terrible place, the best of America's spirit is truly shining through there. God Bless America.

the only problem you may run into is that wearing a twin pouch with slacks like Dickies can be tough to get the struts on the pouch to straddle the thick belt loops well. Otherwise, I have been very happy with both the twin pouch and the surefire combo pouch. They are compact, secure, and ride close to the body. Easy on and off without undoing the belt is also a benefit of the design.

Hey Buddy , We at Rafter S make a mag pouch that has an inverted clip attachment . It will stay put no maater what . It will have the proper tension without any screws needed. It can be leather , shark , gator , ostrich . We use a very stout clip which will tilt outwards during your draw but stay closein to the body during carry . I carry at least 10 hours a day with mine and have used it two years with no change in tension . Mine is Sharkskin by the way which wears like Iron .
