There are a variety of excellent magazine pouches out there. Our favorite is the Ky-Tac MP-1 (click to see image). They attach easily to the belt via the Ky-Tac Anchor Loop, and remain utterly secure until purposely removed. Retention is adjustable to the level you want it- you can make them pass your shake and drop test. As for size, they are very compact and reveal most of the mag body to allow for quick and easy retrieval.
Our priority for mag pouches is that they are practical for carry, while keeping up with the performance of wide-open competition gear. We generally run the retention tight enough to hold a mag upside down. It retains well enough for carry and training, and is fast enough for competition. Obviously, we are enamored with kydex, but one person's standard of perfection is always different from the next.
