For all you fellas that think a handgun will serve for bear defense, check out this story: http://1010wins.com/topstories/winstopstories_story_358073539.html

It took 21 shots from 9mm, 20 guage, and 12 guage firearms to bring down the bear. It is theorized that the bear wasn't actually killed, just filled with so much lead it could no longer move.

But...but...I so much WANT to believe that my 9mm is effective against bears.
I know if I just believe HARD enough, it will be true. I just know it.

The article doesn't say whether the shotguns were loaded with slugs, or are they also illegal in NJ?

Most cops I know of usually carry buckshot. The failure of their 9mm to stop it was probably due to too much penetration and expansion. If they had been carrying 1911s they probably would have dropped that angry bear in it's tracks with one shot.

Bear shot in the eye and kept coming? HMMM Must have been U.S. Army Infantry. :D

It gives the amount of rounds fired, but not how many connected and where. :( Was the bear wearing a vest or helmet?
