The Kimber slide stop on my Compact CDP was giving me fits. It had discolored badly and was popping up on a loaded mag.

I bought an Ed Brown slide stop to replace it. Unfortunately the slide stop notch on the Kimbers is too wide, and while the Ed Brown will lock the slide back on empty, the part of the stop that engages the notch is too narrow to allow a slingshot/overhand release of the slide -- it never touches the front of the slide stop notch. I have to use the slide stop to release the slide.

Can anyone recommend a stainless replacement stop that will work with the Kimber?

I replaced mine with a EGW slide stop, drop in, works like it should.

My Kimber Compact Stainless also had a problem with rounds pushing up the slide stop and locking the slide back. I replaced the slide stop with a Wilson. I tried an Ed Brown hardcore, but prefer the Wilson. I'll be heading to the range tomorrow to see if the problem is fixed. I'm sure it will be, though, because the Wilson stop is a much better design.

If you have a shok-buff in the gun, take it out and try the slingshot again. It just might work...

No shok-buff. It's obvious just looking at the slide stop that it doesn't have enough width to it for the Kimber slide stop notch (which I've heard is oversized.)

Just put an Ed Brown in a Kimber last night and saw what you are describing. This particualr pistol will operate from overhand release, but it's verrry close...we'll see how it works.

I'd go with a Wilson for yours - I have the Bulletproof in a couple guns and like them - unfortunately they're twice the price of the regular Wilson slide stop - don't know if they're twice as good

Wilson doesn't make a SS Bulletproof stop IIRC. Which is too bad because I like the fact that the bulletproof ones come pre-dimpled.

I went to the range today and fired 150 rounds without a hiccup. The Wilson slide stop really did the trick.

The Brown worked fine in the Kimber yesterday...engagement with the overhand release is not much however...

Was that straight Brown or Brown Hardcore?

The one I am using is the hardcore and there's just not enough engagement.

It's at the gunsmith's right now and I asked him to put in a Wilson stop. (Obviously I could have done it myself but I thought I'd have him do it so I could give him a little more $.)

It was the regular Brown, not a Hardcore.

Like you said, the slot on Kimbers is wide, and this Brown is just barely long enough to contact the release bevel - I'd be more comfortable if it had more beef...

Installed it in a friend's new Kimber - the "McKimber" slide stop was out of spec and causing some serious double feeds - I fixed the original, but recommended he put in a quality part and keep the old for a spare. The Brown checkered matched the original in looks and he went with it over a Wilson.

BTW, did you get the standard stainless Wilson or go with the bulletproof?

I asked for the standard Wilson stainless since they don't make Bulletproof in stainless.

Wilson will cut a detent in a stainless slide stop for $10.00. It will match yor gun and solve your premature slide lock problem, at least it did in my stainless gold match. The only problem is it might take a few weeks to get it.

I've noticed the same issue with Kimber slide stops, both the crap that comes stock on them and the fact the the slide release notch is too wide. Unfortunately I don't know of any vendors that offer one with a longer release tab. As for the dimple, oddly enough I had the same slide-lock problem on my Remington Rand last time at the range. Afterward I put a slight dimple on the back of the slide stop using my Dremel and the thing actually behaves now. I consider that dimple just as mandatory on a defensive 1911 as good sights and a polished feed ramp.
