Looking to add the Rock Island 9mm 1911 to my 9mm collection!
It will be more for paper punching , but depending on function may carry it as a daily !
Right now my carry in my 9mm Shield
Right now no .45 in my group but that may change lol
What is your opinion of the RIA ?
A very low priced gun but most reviews on line seem good.
But first hand comments are better IMO

Thanks

I have no experience with their 9mm pistols, but I own a Rock Ultra (8+1) in .45 ACP, a Tac Ultra HC (14+1) in .45 ACP, and I previously owned a Rock Ultra HC (16+1) in 10mm. I have found them to be excellent pistols, especially for the small price tag. They have all functioned 100% reliably & fit is very good. The parkerized finish seems a bit 'fragile,' i.e. easily scratched or marred, but I guess that gives them some extra character. I'm betting someone will chime in and recommend Tisas. I have no experience with them but they seem to be becoming quite popular. Good luck, and do let us know what you choose. And, welcome to the forum.
Love mine. I do want to get another .45 some day once I save up but will not part with the 9mm I love this one. also the RIA 9mm 1911 is fun to shoot and cheaper to shoot, too.
Some don't like the parkerized finish but it doesn't bother me.
My favorite pistol to take to the range.

The only RIA I have is the BBR 3.10 in .45acp. It was my first 1911 and after some extractor tuning became a fun little gun. The SDS/Tisas are beginning to develop a following. I have several of them and they are the best bang for the buck, imo.
I would rate the general out-of-the-box reliability of the RIA 9mm's at least as good as Colt or SA and general quality of the parts (metallurgy etc.) better than the Turkish guns (Hayes Custom does custom packages on RIA guns using most of the original parts (including trigger work on the fire control components) and that speaks well for their quality. Customer service from RIA is very good (they have some actually knowledgeable guys there).

I like RIA’s. The standard government models with the spur hammers and gi sights seem to be fit a bit better in my limited experience. If it runs great out of the box (it should), you are done. If not, read the extractor sticky.

best wishes
Yep, I have both the .45, and 9mm versions of the RIA 1911 FS. Both have been flawless since I bought them. I got the .45 a few years ago, and it was so flawless that when I was looking for a 9mm 1911 earlier this year, I just had to give them a try. I have to say, I'm not disappointed at all. As a matter of fact, I just had my 9mm out yesterday, just for a fun day at the range.
I would not hesitate to purchase or recommend the RIA 1911.

Full disclosure, I also currently have other 1911 manufactures, and have even had others and 'traded' them off. So, I guess what I'm saying is I do/did have a bar to compare them to.
Nothing wrong with a RIA most run pretty good out of the box .
That said ,there are better options IMO and yes I’ve owned several take a look at what Bul Armory offers or maybe Tisas they have several models .
Moderators Thank you for moving this thread to the right place !
I am old and new so thts my story lol

Thank you all for the fast reply's
Great info
I will get a .45 sooner or later lol.
Always wanted a .45 but the 9mm makes more sense to me right now.
It will fit right in next to my other 9mm lol
And when we do hit the range burning 300+ rounds is a slow day ! So 9mm will not break the bank .
I was surprise how nice the RIA looks and the fit and finish for a 450$ gun IMO was real nice,
And I do like their finish !
Maybe I should get the 9mm and their .45 version lol

Being a little lazy, I'll repost from another forum, from about a year ago...
Well, I never really said I'd never buy a cheap 1911, and I never really said I'd never buy one in 9mm. But I've always had reservations about both.

Having said that, I've been hearing a lot of good press about 9mm 1911's, and about RIA's. Sooo, I made an impulse buy today - an RIA 9mm 1911:

Air gun Trigger Grey Gun barrel Gun accessory

I must say I'm impressed with the "Fit 'n' Finish", and it has a very nice feel to the action. Finish is a sort of Parkerized look. The trigger is definitely not up to the Colt/DW/LB standard I'm used to, but I think it will improve with the break-in.

It was getting dark when I got home today, so I wasn't able to step out back & run a few rounds through it. I think I'm going to be happy, though!

Maybe some of you guys (or ladies) who have 9mm 1911's can give me a little advice! As I was buying the pistol, I asked about additional magazines. Being completely new to the 9mm 1911 world, I had no idea what the mag options are. The only option at the shop was some Wilson Combat 9mm mags at an obscene price, but they don't seem to work in this pistol! They fit OK, but with an empty mag and the slide release fully depressed, the pistol would not return to battery. The saleslady tried it out for me, and the mag ended up stuck in the gun, with the slide locked up too! Took a little finagling to get everything freed up again!

So, can anyone suggest a good 9mm mag that will work in my RIA? I'm really looking forward to learning what all the fuss is about with 9mm 1911's! TIA for any suggestions!

I have a RIA 9mm GI 1911. The first one I bought had to be replaced by RIA. The second one has been trouble free after I tuned the extractor.

The reason I had to tune the extractor is the fact that RIA uses the same slide and parts for their 9mm and 38 Super pistols. The extractor in mine was tuned for the larger 38 Super rim so I had to adjust it for 9mm. After doing that, it has been perfect.

I have a Tactical (the old model) in 9mm. Runs slick as poop thru a goose and the accuracy is predictably very good. I bought it used and so expected an issue or two. No issues at all. I don’t hesitate to carry it.
Got the RIA 9 mm plain Government model. It had every malfunction that you can imagine. Sent it back and it works fine now, but I have not tested it sufficiently since they fixed it to trust it for EDC.

I got the M1911 A1 FS in 9mm a couple of years ago. It's my one and only 1911. Mine has been extremely reliable and accurate and even feeds Federal HSTs without an issue. Enjoy yours!

I'm really happy with my RIA 9nn but it waa a bit of work to get there. A lot of the final fit is done by hand and has varied widely in the three RIA 1911's I have. My 9mm was in the middle of the road and of the box it could not get through 10 rounds without a hiccup.

"The Colt .45 automatic: A shop manual" by Jerry Kuhnhausen is a great reference, and following his inspection procedures for a new gun is perfect. I wound up following these procedures and the Rock has been 100% reliable since then. Mostly focusing on burrs, tool marks, and high spots on barrel to frame fit. Both the barrel and frame had high rough spots that needed to get knocked down with a stone:

I also hit high spots on the inside of the dustcover, the breach face, and the slide stop to reduce friction and wear. All that made the action buttery smooth. While I was in there, I polished the trigger bow & channels, put in a reduced power recoil spring and increased power hammer spring.

That made it run like a champ! I latwr added better sights, tac hammer & grip safety and it is now my go to 9mm for fun/recreation. Here it is after ~3,000 rounds.

I bought a RIA GI 38 super and thought to have myself a 9mm by replacing the barrel with the RIA 9mm barrel. Of course, I also changed out the recoil spring and the magazines. I fully expected to have a lot of fitting and function issues. Well, I was wrong. The barrel was a drop-in and I have not needed to touch the extractor. Function has been perfect with 9mm magazines of various styles and brands. In fact, it functions almost perfectly feeding 9mm with 38 Super mags. YMMV.

I tried the new tisas 9mm and it was a dud, I'd never seen a 1911 move in slow motion to the point it wouldn't feed or fire, I tried 45acp springs, flitz on the rails and even the hammer drop was slow and weak. I traded it in and never looked back and it sucks because I loved the looks of it
