RIA Compact in .45ACP questions

I have a full size Rock and a Full size Springfield. love them . I have always heard to try not to deviate from the original caliber and the original size for fear that things may get unreliable. I have heard my share or horror stories of 1911 Compacts and all. But I have recently been reading better reports of ROck Island Compacts/Officer sized models in the .45ACP .
Can any of you guys help me out and give me some reports of any of your recent Rocks Island compacts/officer sized 1911's in .45acp ?
Any help and information is appreciated .
I forgot to add that the model I am lookin at is the 51429 .

A full detail strip, clean, and lube is in order before you even think about evaluating reliability. They put that packing gunk in every nook and cranny on those things.......

Check this target from my 1911 GI compact (yes compact with GI sights) from last weekend at 15 yards. The only thing I did to improve was put a small detent on the face of the slide lock lever cause it was riding up during recoil. Now it runs perfect.

I have the CS which is the GI officer. This has been one of the best 1911's I've owned. I've put 1500 flawless rounds through it with only a few FTF and they were my fault, limp wristing. I've carefully inspected it before cleaning everytime and it shows absolutely no erroneous fitment problems at all. The barrel lock up lugs are crisp, bowtie area on the frame shows no sign of wear except for some small finish wear which is normal. At 10 yards off hand I usually put 50 rounds through a large ragged 6 inch hole knocking the the bullseye off the target. The only problem I've had is the grip safety moved gritty. I tore it down to the frame and found a few burrs on the grip safety, I filed them off and finished with 400 grit SP and easily fixed it. I would highly recommend the Rock Island 45 compact, it's a great piece!
Tercel89- Just seeing this thread but if you still want some input on this I have some. I bought my grandson a .45 CS-GI as a Christmas present in 2012 and a Tactical version of the same gun for myself in 2013.
It goes without saying that the Tac versions major differences are the sights and they are far superior. My grandson with far younger eyes than mine disliked the GI sights so much he asked that I change them which I did for some white-dot units. Below the slide the GI and Tac models are the same except for the trigger which is skeletonized on the Tac. I have replaced the trigger, hammer, MSH, thumb-safety, sights, grips, mag release and have Cerakoted my Tac mostly for aesthetic reasons but also for better concealability as a IWB weapon and to allow for my arthritic thumbs. It has never failed to fire with either ball or defensive ammo (Hornady Critical Defense) and while the standard ACT-Mags work well I use SIG-brand flat-bottomed mags for less printing on over-garments. Compact 1911's are more difficult to shoot well than full size guns and require more practice to use comfortably and accurately but at combat range (up to 7-meters) they are quite accurate and effective. Work with it and you will be pleased. I enjoy shooting my Tac almost more than any of my other Rock 1911's and have no qualms about using it for personal defense.
Good luck with your decision.

I measured (on the pistol) the factory msh on my compact rock against a smith & alexander (officer sized) msh on another pistol and got a solid 1/16" difference in length with the rock being the shorter of the two. Perhaps an 1/8" if I removed them for a more accurate measurement. The same difference resulted when comparing the rock to my springfield ultra compact msh. Whose msh did you use to replace yours with? Thanks. PS: I do know that Wolff "officer" size hammer springs are too large a diameter for the Rock compact msh which deprives folks of trying different weight springs. Wolff actually makes the spring for the Rock but for some reason you can only get it through the Rock folks.
I carry a 3.5" regularly, I have shot it hundreds of times without a single hiccup! Buy one, Shoot the heck out of it, Train with it!

Great to hear ! I have great confidence with my full size Rock so this is all great to hear. I just wish the front end was made like the full size so I wouldn't have to use a paperclip to take it apart . BUt other than that I am excited about getting one.

Its easier than a std. bushing take down!
bamashooter- I used the Wilson Combat Round-Butt MSH. It took a little modification of the pointy ends of the grip frame to match the contour and some filing on the bottom of the Rock grip safety to get things to function properly. I used the main spring that came with the Rock MSH and the stock plunger and bottom cup as the Ed Brown parts I had were too long. I can't speak to the difference in spring diameters because I didn't try any of the Wolff main springs I had on hand as they were obviously for a full-sized MSH and were too long. No complaints though, it slams the EGW hammer I put on the thing just fine for now.
This is the Wilson MSH:

Have a 3.5 in RIA bought two months ago, had numerous failures. Not going into battery, feeding, extracting. Gradually these disappeared as the round count went up. At 200 rounds it now funktiones well and I carry it.

I have the Citadel Officer model (same company) and never had an issue with the gun feeding any type of ammo. I carry it all the time.

I looked at a used Citadel last night. The LGS had one for $500.00.

The failure of 1911’s in compact size guns was considerable at the range some years ago when I worked there. I think it has improved somewhat in recent years. I just remember thinking at all times when I had to get involved with unhappy owners of said guns—was I would not trust my life to the gun. The only gun in that size I saw run fairly reliably was the Colt Defender. I think things have improved since then but I don’t know that for sure.
Then there is this:
“The basic functional difference between a full size (as John Browning designed it) 1911 pistol and a compact version with a 4.25” or shorter barrel is slide mass and speed. Basically anytime you reduce mass and propel it with the same energy you will get faster cycle speed. Why does this matter? The pistol needs a certain amount of time to eject a fired case, allow the magazine to lift, position the next round for proper feeding and chamber the round. When slide mass is reduced and therefore slide cycle speed increased there may not be time for this to all happen properly.”
I only own full size 1911 guns but I have shot many Commander size 1911’s I really liked. Not so much with the compact (Officer) 1911’s. Just my personal experience. They are cool looking and somewhat easier to conceal by some reports but I am old school in this thought process and learned a long time ago how to dress and conceal a full size 1911 gun. If I were younger and more well-disposed to the small 1911—maybe.

I have had a couple Kimber Ultras and have a Kimber Compact, never had a problem with any of them. Never had to tweak them either. I load 200 gr LSWC in all my 1911s so maybe I'm just lucky that I load a round they all like, it's possible. The Ultra I have now is really tight and very accurate, shoots just as well as the Compact, actually a little better, I don't know how many thousands of rounds I've put thru an Ultra but never had a problem. Kimber has the Officers platform figured out!

I have that model.
Installed Wilson extended thumb safety and Advanced Tactical tritium front sight.
Sight cost $19.95.
Safety was $31.00.
No malfunctions.
Very pleased.

Well……my Kimber experience didn‘t work out as well. Purchased a NIB Ultra CDP II several years ago with the intent that it would become my EDC. Put about 300rds thru it before taking on an advanced defense course with it that required another 300rds of ‘factory ammo’. (I used Winchester 230gr Ball). About 50rds into the course, the pistol ‘puked out’ it‘s guide rod!!! 😱 Fortunately, I had the foresight to bring my Colt, ‘Lightweight Commander’ along as a backup to finish the course.
The Kimber has moved on from my stable of 1911s…..(Just couldn’t abide it for CCW after that failure.) Recently purchased a RI GI CS. Have 300rds of ‘hardball’ thru it. Only 2 FTFeed issues with Wilson 8rd magazines during the first 100rds. Obviously not magazines to use with the pistol. Not a hiccup since, using Wilson & McCormick 7rd mags. Runs like a top!
The Kimber was a beautiful pistol! Tight as a tick, accurate and a melted exterior! (3” barrel vs 3.5” for the RI.) I’m still evaluating the RI for EDC. So far, I’m giving it very good marks. Many rounds yet to put thru it! Not as pretty as the Kimber but just as well built. I upgraded the grips but am very satisfied with everything else.

I purchased a GI CS Special Edition ( I think that just means checkered grips) last weekend. When I initially fired it, I couldn't get more than 2 rounds to fire consecutively! Boy was I hot. I switched to an older gi full sized magazine and it ran 2 magazines with one failure to feed. It has an odd malfunction like it is bouncing back slightly out of battery. I can easily close the slide and fire with the thumb of my support hand. Weird. Going to sneak out back in the drizzle and try it again today. I hope it will break in and run because it is THE perfect 1911 configuration for me. Shorter barrel, gi sights, matte finish. I love it but it needs to run.
I would do a few things. Check the extractor tension, do a thorough cleaning and lube generously, If the mags are new, load them and let them sit so the springs can tension properly.

The 3.5" was reliable after I replaced extractor with factory one from Tombstone Tactical. It functioned w/o problems with 230gr and 185 gr ball plus Gold Dot and Remington HPR hollow points.
I honestly think when it comes to mass-produced short ballel 1911s it's luck of the draw.
Well no improvement really, it was back to a single shot. Checked extractor tension and "plunk test" and they seemed fine. Mic'd my ammo (Armscor 230 gr hardball made in usa) and case length and overall length in spec. Lubed it well and will try some Barnaul steel case hardball tomorrow. It's just failing to fully chamber and lock up. I can lightly press on the rear of the slide with my thumb and it will lock up easily and fire. Slide movement is smooth as glass. Ordered a 24lb recoil spring. Hate this, I'm going to have Colt money in this gun by the time it runs like it should.
