I have a Gov't Colt 1911 that was born in 1918 and never issued. At some point in its life it went back to the armory for refurbishing (parkerized, etc.) but was still never issued. It is basically NIB. I would like to have a customized 1911 but can't decide if I would be better off leaving this pistol as-is and just finding another to "play" with. The pistol would be used for recreational purposes and possibly for home defense. No need to carry as I have a Glock 19 for that. Your opinions appreciated.

Leave it alone...

While it was Armory refurbished, and un-issued, it still has a history, and if it's it nice shape, a 1911 is a classic.

If it was a beat-up 1911A1, I'd say go for it, but the 1911's are something different.

like a fine 55 T-Bird, they're meant to be driven every once in a while, but not daily...

I totally agree with jaydee. Don't mess with it, and treat it gently. Your grandson might just use it as a down payment on his house. Those old 1911's are in short supply, and I'd rather use a later pistol to build on anyhow.

Thanks to all for your feedback. This confirms my general feelings. When you look at the price guides they tell you that a refurb like this will destroy the collector value...thus my inquiry. Thanks again.
