Does using something like a Krieger detent tool,to detent the end of the slide stop, help prevent premature slide lock?Is this a common practice for top custom 1911 smiths?Should this be done to my gun?Is there any drawbacks from doing this?

I assume you're talking about putting a little dimple on the end of the slide stop where it meets the plunger. Properly done it is an asset. Most good pistolsmiths do it as part of a reliability package, and I recently did it to my Remington Rand GI .45 since it had the same problem. Improperly done, and it's time to buy a new slide stop.
