Nice article. And using the same logic if prescription drug companies made legal heroin available for $.25 a day for the average junkie who is responsible for all the deaths caused by illegal drugs, crime, and narcoterrorism? The people buying the illegal drugs? Or the government keeping it illegal and inflating the price many many times over? I havent been able to sort out my feelings and thoughts on the drug issue, as I have several conflicted views about it, but I do enjoy kicking around ideas about it.

Drug legalization would certainly work as part of a total libertarian revamping of our country but barring that people could just sit around on the public dole smoking dope.

Im not. Look at the Netherlands for proof that it can get worse. I agree with all the rest of your statements, I just think the combination of legalized drugs and the current welfare entitlement state would be disastrous. It seems to need to be all or nothing. Otherwise its just taking a dollar from enforcement and law to restrict this behavior to spending the dollar on welfare (or other social spending like mental hospitals to treat all the people who destroy their minds with drugs) and law to restrict that behavior. Hope that makes sense I was on the road for part of last night and didnt get much sleep.

Its my understanding that people in various European countries can get government funds to sit around being "artists" and doing drugs.

I wouldnt particularly care if drugs were legal, but I do think its necessary for society to be changed to make people responsible for their own actions and the consequences of drug use at the same time.

Otherwise as long as your behavior is a public expense it provides the excuse for the government to regulate behavior. You can see that in any arena where government funds are involved. Mandatory seatbelt laws, bicycle helmet laws, gunlock requirements in certain lessfree states, etc.

Also wanted to add: Maybe I am unfairly associating their drug situation with the totally degenerate pornography/ human trafficking and other aspects of european society. I just see very little in europe I would want to see my country emulate.

Well Jim I dont know that those numbers are valid (I would appreciate a reliable source to learn more if you routinely check up on such things), but if they are does that mean that its as a result of their policies rather than a result of other cultural and national characteristics? If so that gives anti gunners alot of ammo in regard to the policies they would like to see rammed down our throats for the purposes of "reducing crime" in this country.

Might it be more likely that they are just less disposed to crime in the Netherlands? Otherwise why does it make sense that they have little gun crime and more severe gun control and drug decriminalization and little drug crime? Isnt that a contradiction?

PS Your first statistic could be as simple as US High School Seniors being 12 times as honest as Europeans.



Anyways Im not opposed to legalizing drugs I just dont think its a good idea to combine it with the current entitlement system.

The other problem I had with this ad campaign is that it relies on the same specious argument that Arianna Huffington used when she said that SUV drivers are supporting terrorism.

Yes and not only that but the authors of this add do not want to apply the same logic to any other product or concern involved with money. Like buying anything from China is supporting slavery, genocide, and tyranny. Paying your taxes supports infanticide, socialism, and other objectionable international causes.

Applying this kind of logic to everything would make life impossible. It kinda reminds me of those Buddhists who walk around with the people sweeping bugs out of the way so they dont take life.
