All of the Slim-Tech wood stocks I've seem have had the lightly etched "checkering". Brownells www.brownells.com sells Chip McCormick thin stocks in both smooth and checkered versions. The McCormick stocks use different hardware (bushings and screws) than do the AFS stocks. There is an outfit on the web www.woodgrips.com that sells these too. From the illustrations, they look the same as what McCormick is offering.

Kim Ahrends is making thin stocks now too. His are neither smooth nor checkered, but have grooves cut in the stocks, lengthwise, at intervals. I would suspect that you could get them without the grooves too. Check Don Williams' www.pickagrip.com for Ahrends stocks.
