Please forgive another WWII Colt newbie question.

Does anyone here have access to any resources that would provide exact shipping dates from Colt's to Springfield Armory? Also, specific manufacturing dates?

My serial number is 907120. I have found annual production charts by serial number and through extrapolation calculate it was produced around April.

I have seen on some websites actual shipping dates of an individual gun. So I'm guessing the info is available somewhere. Or, does it take a Colt Letter of Documentation?

I'd genuinely appreciate any enlightenment.

Your pistol was shipped when Colt was rushing to fill orders. They had stopped shipping sequential serial numbers in July, 1942.

Clawson's big book lists 6 possible shipments covering your serial number:
  • 3/17/43...896000-908000
  • 3/23/43...897000-909000
  • 3/25/43...889000-915000
  • 4/7/43...896000-919000
  • 4/12/43...903000-920000
  • 4/17/43...902000-921000

Mid March to mid April, 1943 is about as close as we're going to get.

I hope this helps.

Hey Joe, Great thanks for taking the time to look up and post this information. I appreciate it. So, it answers my question with the old cliche some good news and some bad news. Good news is yes, specific shipping information is available. Bad new is, but only specific by serial number until mid 1942. :)

Btw, I did not forget about posting a few additional photos in the other thread of the slide stop checkering and the ordnance stamping on my 1943. I'll try to get some up tomorrow.

(I did take a look at the ordnance stamping under a bright light with a jeweler's loupe. Unfortunately it is not quite complete. It's missing it's bottom (six o'clock) portion between the breech ends of the crossed cannons.)

The Ordnance stamp was rarely stamped complete... and what you are describing is very common.

The actual shipping date would be available from Colt - at a cost of $100 and several months. So, you will need to decide how badly you want to know the actual shipping date for your pistol. The source for the shipping dates also had the shipping locations on them. I don't have my "big book" handy, but I wouldn't be surprised if they all were shipped to Springfield Armory. (My guess for today...)

Looks like you grabbed a nice gun!
