Are the marks primarily on the slide? Mine were, and I ended up polishing the flats on both sides to a mirror finish just to get rid of some of the marks.
If they're on the frame, that's another story, as any polishing will need to be media-blasted to match the matt finish on the rest of the frame.
Grips? I like Hogue wrap around rubber grips - not necessarily for looks (though they make my guns look "tough"), but the fit my hand perfectly and I never have trouble getting a good grip.
