You have to watch the whole episode and also know the nature of the series.

Shatner's character is both an imbecile and brilliant. Brilliant in that he's a great attorney and often extremely insightful, and an imbecile in that he will act oddly and has Mad Cow (the only evidence of which is stuff he had access to before anybody else) which supposedly is why he acts like an idiot sometimes (or he's fabricated the Mad Cow as an excuse to act in certain ways when he wants to, nobody knows) and says his name (first and last) as much as possible because he is afraid he'll forget it.

Oh, and Shatner's character is a Republican.

Shatner's character (Denny Krane), is very right wing, Pro-Bush. His friend, Alan Shores (played by James Spader), is VERY left wing. In the last episode, Alan Shores states twice within the last five minutes of the show that he favors an assault weapons ban. :barf:

I like the show, hate the politics.

Yeah, but Alan isn't always right. While Alan says he wouldn't carry a gun, the police say more than once that they caught that criminal, who they had been looking for, because Denny was carrying a gun.
