They did it again. I had to speak up.

Stopped by the lgs today and while I was there fed ex brought in a transfer. A really nice Night hawk 1911. After opening the box and logging it in they let every one in the store (customers included)finger bang this gun. (i watched them do the same thing a few years back) It was not just fondling they were racking the slide and dropping it on an empty chamber, Dropping the mags and slapping them back in, and dry firing.

After watching this guys expensive gun being passed around like a cheap hooker I had to say something. I looked at the guys behind the counter and asked if they thought the gun owner would appreciate this behavior. They replied with a few comments and I left. I will bring this up to the shop owner and hope he will address the issue and I will find another shop for my transfers.

Was I out of line? Should I have kept my mouth shut? Did I do the right thing? All replies welcome. If I was wrong I will go back and give them an apology.

Good for you! I would have done the same. I do know the shop that does my transfers takes the guns out to look at them and may possibly let customers handle them. I'm OK with that. They are professional enough that I doubt they would let anyone do what you are describing.

No apology necessary. If the gun owner lets somebody finger F his 5K gun that’s OK. It’s not OK for the LGS employees to let their customers do it. 🤬 If that was my gun and I had seen that happen I would have been livid.

A previous FFL I knew used to wait and let you open the box just so you knew no one touched it. It took a little longer but it was nice to know it was not messed with.

I'm glad you said something- I too would find a new FFL.

You did the right thing to speak up. Bad behavior should never be encouraged by silence. Good for you. You stood up for someone who was not there to defend himself, and that is always appropriate.

For what it's worth, you did right in my thought process. I once had a pistol laid away at my local LGS and walked in to find it being passed around and handled not to my liking. After I removed it from one of the people's hands me and the owner had a short meaningful discussion lol

On any other sub $1k 1911, I'd say you were wrong, but those guns are finely tuned and should not be abused, which can ruin a high quality, handfitted pistol like that.

It's pretty rural here. LGS few and far between. Virtually no places to look at nice guns. So if I go into my favorite transfer place (a shooting range close by) and the counter person says "Dave, have you ever seen or handled a Super Duper?" If I say no he takes it out and lets me handle and look at it. Carefully. They trust me. I think this is just great and something a transfer agent, friendly gun store, or shooting range should to with trusted customers. Try getting something like that from Cabela's. They are not to let them mishandle my guns but for them to give others an opportunity to see and handle them I'm certainly OK with that. I want them to do the same for me.

I don't my local transfer guy or LGS to start acting like the counter guys at Cabela's.

Looky-look is groovy... Touchy-feely is a MAYBE (usual qualifications).

You do NOT dick-up some clowns new toy w/o his permission and before he even takes possession.. Sheesh, these guys should sell cars!

(And for Certain People: it doesn't matter if it's a friggin' NIGHTHAWK or a Hi-Point)

As I get a little older, it is easier to speak my mind. These LGS yokels had to be read the riot act and you were the voice of reason to do it. Maybe a seed of doubt about their debased ways will sprout in at least one of their barren wrinkle-free minds.

You did the right thing, if I knew they molested my gun I'd tell them return it.... my gun, proprioter
logs it in and makes sure everything is cool and I'm the next to touch it. If that's a problem you're not professional and I should skull .... you for being stupid.

Saw this video with these 2 Fudds regarding the 7 sins of firearms. Using the slide lock to release the slide was one of them.

I agree with most of what these 2 guys say about handing pistols and have acted accordingly.

Price really has nothing to do with it... the gun was not the FFL's to pass around the store. It was already bought and paid for.

The shipping carton should not be opened until the purchaser is present. I won a new revolver at an NRA event that had a turn ring due to folks / volunteers and possibly FFL staff messing with it. Still good to win it but it should have been NIB.

I've done it at the LGS, and I do it with mine. And I've hit a mag-release - in store - to have the damned thing shoot OUT of the grip, BOUNCE off my chest and bounce across the floor.. (and I concluded any damned pistol that feels it has to THROW the mags - empty - across the room can stay in the store)

That's why the store has display cases of EXAMPLES. (or it should). And, if they have live braincells they'll discount that item and move it out in a couple weeks or month.

scubadad ---- Speaking Up is usually the right thing to do. Not just in gun shops but in all aspects of life. Because if you feel the compulsion to do so, there's probably a dang good reason.

I'll take the role of Speak Up Guy if nobody else takes the initiative first. This generally does not go smoothly for me as jerks usually ramp-up their jerkiness when called out, but I still gotta stand up if needed. My wife says she dislikes this but I can also tell that it pleases her too ;)

You did well, Sir.

20 years ago I bought one of the then-new Colt Series 70 reproductions online and had it transferred. I was waiting on the paperwork I had just filled out when some big, loud motormouth of a customer saw it on the counter, picked it up and began playing with it while continuing to yack to his friend. Before I could say anything he slipped while racking the slide, and accidentally banged the gun against the edge of the counter and put a mark on the triggerguard. I was beyond pissed. The guy profusely apologized, but aside from that there was nothing anyone could do about it.

You are right. That should have never happened. Regardless of the price paid for the gun, it is someone else's property. Does not belong to the LGS and if they want to pass around a firearm, they need to order one for their stock.

I'm kind of anal when it comes to this kind of stuff. I'd say something. I'd probably follow it up in writing to the owner/manager etc. Nobody seems to have any respect for anything or anyone these days. I don't want an item I purchased/ordered to be beat up by a bunch of idiots.

I’ve switched shops to do my transfers because I knew the one I used at least let the employees play with guns and pass them around. I was told there was a gun shop in my town that would sell a transferred gun and give the legal owner the shops cost for that gun. Owner said when it was logged in that it was technically their gun and legal.

Most shops I would not trust with a transfer and good for you for making the comments.
