Used Dillon Press

Okay guys I am disappointed... I was looking at a used Dillon XL650 on Facebook and had several conversations with the owner. The press looked like new in the pictures. Seems he bought the press new about 5 years ago with a ton of extras and only used it sparingly. It had the case feeder, low primer and powder sensors, roller handle, two sets of dies which I did not need, a wet tumbler. Hornady case prep station, reloading manuals and a pile of other related equipment. He wanted $900 firm. It seems his interests had changed, and he needed the space. It was just marked as sold... Crap! If I were not 3 hours away I would have already been to pick it up.

I priced a similarly equipped XL750 and just the press without any of the peripherals was over $1400. So, my question is was that as good a deal as I think it was? I know the 750 replaced the 650 and is stronger, but would that have mattered if my primary use would be 9mm and 45acp? So tell me, how bad did I mess up? Thanks! Danny

Let me put it this way Danny, I’m not a $650 fan boy and I would have jumped on it.

Sans the new models offered a year or two ago, I own every press that Dillon has ever made except for the 650 and 50 BMG.

In spite of many fan boys preaching the 650 kool aid, it just never appealed to me when I already had multiple 1050’s.

But that deal would make it worth while.

Sounds like you missed out. So? There are other deals out there. Why kick yourself? There will be a lot more deals in the future because the economy is going to tank and people like your guy in the story are going to be dumping everything. Hang in and be patient… for not a whole lot longer.

Patients Grasshopper, another 650XL will be along shortly. Keep your eyes peeled, they pop up more often than you think. Just be ready to pull the trigger. I’m currently changing the indexer return spring on my 650XL. Certainly challenging, but after a video or two, I think I’ll give her another go. Best of luck in your search!
I always believe that for every door that closes, another one opens. Get all your homework done in advance, so when another deal pops up, you're ready to pounce on it asap. Have the cash stashed in a drawer so you're ready to rock and roll when it comes your way. I've lost out because of a trip to the ATM. 😒

So you didn't bother to get this because of a measly 3-hour drive. Really?!
I have a 550 and have probably loaded 40-50 thousand rounds on it, which is not a lot.. But the press is as tight as new..

Yes. You messed up.

But the 750 isnt any better/stronger than the 650. Pretty much the same machine with a different priming system.

If you get a wild hair and decide to order a new one, do it now. Dillons normal January price hike isnt going to be pretty this year.
This 750 was 1300 delivered, with casefeeder. Scheels had the best price. Flawless, get one.

Yup, I screwed up. No excuses…. I could give you a bunch, but that doesn’t change the bottom line. I will keep looking. One question: is the 650/750 frame worth waiting for if a 550 were to be available? Thanks! Danny

The 750's main vertical frame member is substantially beefed up:
Have 2 gifted to me 550s that run fine, no need to upgrade. I was curious and watched the 650-750 video, interesting that the 750 priming system is the 550 priming system. I don’t shoot enough to justify all of the automatic feed and index upgrades. You should have jumped, 3 hrs is not too far for a good deal. I drive 2 hrs 20 minutes to shoot at my cas club every month.

i have a 550 also, but the 750 is just insane. One hand on the handle, one putting bullets on.
I do shoot a lot, so it has been on my short list for a while.

my research showed some love/hate relationship with the 650 priming system. My 750 is identical to the 550 in priming, and works well.

@Tom Freeman, you say the priming system is different. Is it better or just a cost savings to the manufacturer? Reason I ask is I spent 40+ years in Engineering and 8 years of that was in industry. In industry we advertised "New and Improved", but what it really meant was "we found a cheaper way to provide you with a functional product". The improvements were not always better...

Thank you @7point62. I will check out Scheels. I have seen their website, but it is not one that I think of when shopping. I am going to keep looking for a used one, but you never know. Thanks again! Danny
If you are new to progressive, be aware they usually need some sort of tuning/tweaking to work properly. My case feed needed a little work, primer system was flawless.
