Used Dillon Press

Okay guys I am disappointed... I was looking at a used Dillon XL650 on Facebook and had several conversations with the owner. The press looked like new in the pictures. Seems he bought the press new about 5 years ago with a ton of extras and only used it sparingly. It had the case feeder, low primer and powder sensors, roller handle, two sets of dies which I did not need, a wet tumbler. Hornady case prep station, reloading manuals and a pile of other related equipment. He wanted $900 firm. It seems his interests had changed, and he needed the space. It was just marked as sold... Crap! If I were not 3 hours away I would have already been to pick it up.

I priced a similarly equipped XL750 and just the press without any of the peripherals was over $1400. So, my question is was that as good a deal as I think it was? I know the 750 replaced the 650 and is stronger, but would that have mattered if my primary use would be 9mm and 45acp? So tell me, how bad did I mess up? Thanks! Danny

That was a great deal!! Sorry you missed it. I purchased a second hand XL650 from a dealer who was clearing them out for the XL750. I got it for his cost price. Over the years I have picked up 4 Square Deal B's for reloading my pistol calibers. I picked them up for as low as $75.00 on E-Bay. I have found you can't go wrong with the Dillion service policy. Additionally, I keep a RCBS Rock Chucker for case forming cases for unique calibers.
Okay guys, I have a follow up. I may have mentioned before I am not the most patient person, but I did diligently search for a good used Dillon at a reasonable price. I started this thread in December, so I did make it 3 months... The Dillons I found were too far for a days drive, or came with equipment I didn't need. Or the price was almost as much as a new one. So I bit the bullet (pun intended) and bought a new 750 with the extras I wanted. Thanks to @7point62 for the Scheels recommendation. Since everyone sells at the same price, their free shipping sold me. The packages were delivered to my door today. Guess what I will be doing as soon as I have some free time! :) Thanks again! Danny

Congrats on the new XL 750, MG! You will be very pleased.
Take your time with set up. Enjoy!
Thanks guys! I am very pleased with everything I have seen and read about Dillon and the 750. I had cataract surgery this morning, so it might be a day or so before I start setting it up. I cannot wait to get started! Just hope I can afford to feed this thing! :D Danny
Way to go Danny!! You will not be disappointed. Take your time setting it up & dialing it in. Dillon provides clear, concise directions, and they are only a phone call away. Hope you have a quick recovery from your cataract procedure. Stay safe & keep the brass flying!!🤠

That's a good dog... he's interested in the press, not the cat!
Thanks again guys! I was just playing with one of my tool heads and screwed some dies in. I am using 43 year old RCBS carbide dies. These dies use the knurled split lock ring with a clamp style Allen screw to lock them down. This setup has worked well in my single stage press. In the Dillon tool head the lock rings interfere with the lock ring on the next station. I know there are a ton of lock ring options out there. What do you recommend? I like the looks of the Lee lock rings that come with the proprietary tool, but wanted to see what others have used? Thanks! Danny
I use the Dillon lock rings, and have since my first 550.

I hate these new goddamned Lee spline-rings. Because their stupid "wrench" in freakin' junk.

edit: Note I had just purchased the wire-handled RCBS die wrench for use with the dies, and that works GREAT on the old lee hex-rings.

I got crescents everywhere in here - and they switch to SPLINES?? With a dinky plastic wrench I can barely fine, let alone hold? If someone made an ACTUAL wrench, maybe 4" or so long, then MAYBE I could learn to enjoy these.
C'mon @longarm, tell us how you really feel! 🤣 I found these on Ebay:

They look similar in function to the Lee rings, but come with a steel wrench and use Allen head screws. Kinda pricey, but they look nice. Not sure I want to spend that much money considering I would need at least 2 sets to get started...

Cheaper on amazon. $21.60

Yeah... um, the reviews I looked at are not even for those rings.. I'll pass.
Thanks guys! I may just go with the Dillon rings since I need a bunch if I use the 750 for all my reloading. I keep hearing the Dillon guy in the videos saying “it ain’t a small block Chevy”... Danny
