My buddy and I set out for a day of shooting not just a little but alot we both had 1000 rounds of ammo at first we didnt even consider expending all this ammo until he challenged me. He commented "you and those 1911's over priced and outdated".My pistol he was referring to is a series 70 Colt built buy Larry Vickers, His pistol is a Glock 22. I said outdated huh, so the game began we bet that the first pistol to jam the loser buys the beer and the ammo to replace what we would be expending. We were off and firing round after round and finally it happened twang!at round 879 his extractor flew out , I looked over at his red face he simply said this is bullxxxx!.I continued to fire all my ammo and my Vickers Colt came through with flying RED WHITE & BLUE colors never once did it stop. This pistol was not cleaned and I didnt even relube it just to prove my point. I never doubted my pistol I will admit I felt there would be a tie because his Glock has been reliable for years. My buddy did look at the bright side of things this happened on the range and not on duty and his opinion of 1911's is starting to change. OCG,

I own a Vickers. I can relate. No price is too high for the gun I would bet my life on...

Larry is an artist and a true master. I have had my share of pistols that I have regretted having work done on. Larry's work is the best I have ever seen. Now, only a year more on the wait list for pistol number two....

FWIW I shoot both Glocks and 1911's. I have two Kimbers which have never had a single problem in about 10,000 rds each. I have 6 Glocks and have never had a problem in over 60,000 rds through them all (not each!) My SV open gun malfunctions more often that I'd like, but is still pretty reliable.

At local IDPA/IPSC matches I rarely see a Glock malfunction, (usually as a result of some aftermarket lightened this or that), but I do see 1911's malfunction at nearly every match. I saw quite a few 1911's malfunction at the TX State IDPA match.

Both are excellent guns, but the Glock does not have engineering of the 1911, and certainly does not have the trigger. The 1911 is in my view a far better "shooters" gun, the Glock is a tool. However, a badly maintained or abused Glock will still generally continue to function.

Just my 2c.

It is all a matter of preference and could'nt careless if you can buy a pallet of Glocks or Les Baers for that matter for the price of my pistol. What I paid for my pistol is my business, there will always be conisseur's for one of kind things I happen to be one of the lucky few to own this rare commodity. The point is it performs flawlessly and be counted on in a pinch. This pistol wasnt built by some clock punching employee at a factory,It was built by Well seasoned military guy who simply knows what works and what doesnt by having been there and done that !. My choice and taste in pistols doesnt suit everyone and it shouldnt. We all have the right to our own preferences I dont have a problem with that, so stop whinning about the price and how many of this and that you can have for what that costs who cares!.OCG1911

This is probably bad form, but I can't help myself: What *is* the cost of a Vickers? I realize it's custom work on existing guns, but what can one expect to pay for the end product? I see quotes on Les Baers running to $2500, for instance. Ballpark would be good. I just need to know what to start saving for. :)

So much for "brevity is the soul of wit..."

My point was that the comparison was grossly unfair, not that everyone should own multiple Glocks.
The Vickers gun SHOULD BE much better than a Glock with all the money that goes in (and haven't heard anything to think otherwise).

To turn it around, does a Ford pickup suck because a Ferrari outruns it? Apples and oranges, folks. I don't tote around a BCP-tweaked Delta Elite because I worship plastic, although that kind of Glock failure WAS kinda odd.

Hey Castle,

Don't fret, even if nobody else did, I knew what you were getting at.

But you won't catch me in a Yugo or shooting a Glock.

Let's say this once again. A Glock is everything a gun designed for combat should be. Tough and RELIABLE, which they are. However, the Glock, like any other gun is still a piece of machinery and being such, can fail just like any other machine. They are not God's answer to what a gun should be (that of course is a 1911
) however, what was described above is probably a fluke because, occurances of that nature rarely happens with a Glock. But it does seem like many Glock fanatic would have you believe that this kind of thing happens all the time to all non-Glock pistols.

Bottom line, pick the gun you're most comfortable with, make sure it comes from a reliable and trusted manufacturer and master you choice of weapons.

Be that as it may, I most certainly would pay for a Vickers, just as I would buy a Ferrari if I could afford one.

Actually I owned a Glock 22, and it wasn't too terribly accurate, but very reliable.

The Glock needs a thumb safety. Then it would be (closer to) perfect. For hiking or defensive carry, I am just not crazy about the bar in trigger being sufficient, I don't care what Mr. Glock thinks.

The model 34 and 35 would be okay as target pistols, however.

I have a Glock 19 that does everything that I need a gun to do. A high-end custom 1911 may not do any more for me than my Glock, but does that mean I wouldn't want to own a Vickers - hell no. Even though it may not work any better (in my hands), I can still appreciate the work that goes into making one. I like my Glock alot, but for some reason that I can't explain, I would get rid of it before my 70 Series. I envy anyone who has the resources or can make the sacrifices necessary to own a high end custom. My two cents and probably not worth that

Check out the latest issue of American Handgunner. Jan/Feb 2002, Joe Caominolli www.cominolli.com has developed a very intersting thumb saftey for the Glock. I know this is a 1911 Forum but they also have an article on the Baer Monolith Commanche

Its pretty cool though, ya know if ya like Glocks and all!!
