Went on a search for a 10mm hangun to add to my collection(sigs/berettas/remingtons). I love the power of my .357 sigs and kinda like the "oddball" rounds. Thought i'd get a 1911 since i didn't like my other choices(glock). Picked up a SA 1911 Ultra Compact(tac sites, hogue grips...). E-mailed SA to find out that I'd have to change everything(slide, barrel, mags...). I originally thought i'd just get a barsto and have it fitted. Is there still a chance with this gun? I like the size and feel and haven't even had a chance to shoot it yet. Must I trade it off for a SA compact of Loaded? Your help is appreciated.

What's your question?...are you wanting a 10mm?
...I don't understand why you'd buy the smallest SA if you wanted to use that powerful a cartridge. The 10 will wear a full-size steel set-up out quicker than most other cartridges...It would be extremely difficult to work with if you could set it up...Why not a full size? The .45 sized slide might be a better place to start...or even a used Delta Elite ready to go...that way all you have to do is buy ammo!
If you like the SA Ultra Compact, you might keep it and trade off something else or bite the bullet this go 'round and get what you really want...a 1911 designed for the 10mm...

My question is exactly what I want and what you pointed out. The smallest SA in a boss of a cartridge(ie. 10mm). Since rounds are going to be small, 6, I might as well have something that snorts those 6 rounds. I suppose I could just keep it and use hot .45 rounds but i'll never see the energy of the 10mm

There is no reasonable way to convert your .45 to 10mm. It would need a new slide, ejector, extractor, slide-stop, and barrel.
Which may not be a bad thing...I am not sure any compact (sub-Cmmdr) 1911 could reliably handle the slide velocity of a 10mm.
That said, you could buy or load really hot .45s. Its your hand, and your teeth if the slide flies off.

If you just want a 10, you could pick up an EAA Witness for cheap...they are quality guns.

10mm in an Ultra Compact? NO! The weapon won't last and neither will your hand.
If you want a small 10mm, contact Don Williams at The Action Works or Richard Heinie. Both have done Commander 10mms. That's about the smallest 10mm I'd want in a non-Glock.

Just get a .40S&W 1911 (Kimber makes a few and I do believe in the smaller size) and have a 10mm barrel put into it.
Heinie's shop is noted for 10mm work. I'm sure that they could get one cooking for you.
I had my P16 converted to 10mm just with an Ed Brown drop in barrel. All has been fine. I have a 24lb spring in the pistol (dropped down from 26lbs after the ammo I was using displayed a PRONOUNCED problem).
If you are looking for a small 10mm and don't feel like going through the rigors of the barrel work, just get a G29 and you'd be happier then a clam.
With the SA, why not get a 400 CorBon barrel for it? You'll have 3/4s the performance of the 10mm in the short tube (my G29 out performed my P12 and a G30 in 400 CB in the velocity department) and an "odd ball" caliber.

I thought 1911's were a strong solid built gun? I'm sure my hand will last but the gun won't? I can shoot my .357sig (P229) all day and not get tired. Those two calibers are pretty close besides bullet weight. And that's why I want a 10mm. Something as fast and strong as my .357sig but with a little more weight behind it. Even though Glocks tend to KB in a .40 I have never heard of a 10mm kbing. Which leads me to beleive it's not how strong the gun is, it's just how well the cartridge is supported by the barrel.
I know I won't be happy with a Glock, 20 or 29. Their ugly and don't feel good in my hand. Can't stand that safety tigger either. I'm not impressed with the accuracy of it.

I am doing the exact same search as you right now. I want a compact pistol capable of both 10mm and 357 SIG with just a barrel swap. I am down to two options. One, the Glock 29. Starts out in 10mm, 357 SIG is an easy and inexpensive barrel change. Two, a compact steel frame Kimber 40 S&W. Can have stock barrel reamed to 10mm, but 357 SIG barrel change will be significantly more due to needing gunsmith fit. Glock is more economical and lighter, holds more rounds and may be easier to shoot due to polymer frame. Kimber offers none of that, but it's a 1911...

You can't convert any 1911 to 10mm except for .40 S&W, at least not without tearing it apart and completely re-building the SOB. Your options are pretty much:
1. Get a Delta Elite. For $650-850 you will get a basic 1911 chambered in 10mm.
2. Buy a Para-Ordinance P16-40 or other 1911 in .40S&W and convert it to 10mm with a barrel and recoil spring swap.
3. Pay Les Baer or SVI about $1,700 to make you one.
4. Pay a custom gunsmith to make exactly what you want. $2000 at least, probably more like $3000+.

What about the barrels Barsto, and others, advertises for 1911's as semi-drop in and the must be fitted ones? I've had experience before with Barsto and most of the semi-dropins need no smithing(but those were not 1911's). Why would they advertise a semi-drop in when you have to change everthing as you have stated?

The for mentioned custom shops won't do anything under a 5" barrel because of the spring. i'll try the one suggested to day though.
