Welded vs. Removable Bases

1698 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  jaydee
I am thinking about purchasing some Metalform magazines for my pistol. I was wondering if there is any difference between welded and removable bases, as far as reliability is concerned.

Is the removable base preferable because of easier maintenance of the magazine's internals?

Or is the welded base preferable, because there are fewer parts to break?

Thank you for your replies.

Yes, removeable baseplates allow for easier cleaning/disassembly. They also allow you to change baseplates if they are ever damaged due to ejecting and hitting the ground.

PS- welcome to the forum!

Hello Joe,
Welcome to the forum. I've used some Metalform mags in the past all of them had welded on base plates. I believe if I was going to order more of their mags I would buy the ones with removable base plates. They would be much easier to clean and change springs.

agree with Bob! removable for same reason cleaning and repair as mags fail to.

Removable is the only option provided on the Mag of choice for me... I have some older Colt, and GI mags, but rarely use them. Since 1984 I have been using Wilsons, almost exclusively, and find that the comments above are mutual...

FWIW, I have seen crappy welds on GI style mags come apart, rendering the mag totally useless, while I have broken base plates, and replaced them during matches, and was able to keep going.

The older Wilson bases can crack the lips when the mags were over inserted on slide lock, while "running and gunning". I learned to carry spares in the Range Bag, and have the aluminum ones on my carry mags.

Hope it helps...
