Since my options are limited, I need to find out more about what rifles are definitely not legal in CA, the ones on the list are obvious, but category 3 is vague to say the least. I will probably buy an SKS, but I'm also interested in a MAS 49/56. It's not on the list but the extension on the barrel is the problem, is it a flash suppressor or grenade or flare launcher? I have asked a lot of gun shops about the new laws and get too many different stories. I have been told that if I get an SKS I will have to remove the bayonet, while it is clearly stated at the bottom of category 3 that "bayonets and bayonet lugs are not assault weapons characteristics under California law"
Californians only have about a year left before we won't be able to get anything good, so I plan on buying wisely and often.

What's your budget? I'll probably be buying myself an M1A Scout for Christmas. I too am from CA. If they dont let me have a .223 AR-15, I'll just have to learn to shoot a .308.

I want to spend $550 or less so I can afford to keep buying guns until 2003. There is an FAL in a local shop but it's $1500!!!

Here it is in a nutshell. If it's on the list under the Roberti-Roos act of 89 it's a no no. Now if it is a DETACHABLE BOX MAGAZINE fed SEMI-AUTOMATIC rifle with ANY of the following characteristics it's also a no no.

Flash suppressor or hider. (Compensators and Grenade adaptors do not count)

If it has a pistol grip that extends past the trigger, as in an AR15, M16, AK pistol grip configuration. If you try to disguise it by making it into a thumbhole stock as in the MAC 90 is still counts.

In short if it looks like an AR, M16, or an AK it's an assault weapon. Also beware that the Attorney General can declare a particular weapon an Assault Weapon if he so desires.

Right now, M1A’s and Ruger Mini 14’s do not fit under any of the above but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Oh, I forgot. If you add a flash suppressor to your Mini or M1A, such as a Chote etc., it is now classified as an Assault Weapon.

Someone also mentioned a California legal FAL. Hopefully I am wrong but I can’t picture how that would be legal. If there is an FAL on a gun dealer’s shelf here in California it’s not legal based on the new definitions.

$1700 bucks for a top fed 10 round 308? Not hardly. It may look like an FAL but it's sure as heck isn't an FAL.

Here's a picture of the T48:

If anything, it shows how loopholes can be found to get around these laws (legally). The price is too steep for me, but it sure looks like a cool rifle!

For no particular reason, I've never been to California in my 42 years, but it looks like I now have a particular reason to continue my trend. I had hoped all of the socialists would stay there, but they have been invading my state, Colorado, over the last decade. The b******s.

Back to the topic, I'm glad to hear you are so satisfied with your Bushmaster. If/when I buy an AR15, if for no other reason than it really frosts the liberal/socialists, and the probability that they'll be banned someday, that's the brand I plan to get.

I have seen HK clones and FALs at gun shows sans pistol grips and hi cap mags...legal w/o pistol grips but hard and uncomfortable to shoot...your only option besides an SKS w/fixed magazine is a Ruger Mini-14 or 30 or an M1A w/California legal "muzzle break." pretty much everything else is verboten..as well as some great pistols that aren't on the DOJ approved list....Isn't life grand on the Left Coast..

Well, I decided to grab up the cleanest SKS I have seen so far. It's a Russian model in excellent condition. It was going to go to another gun show this weekend so I had to rescue it from all that. Does anyone know where I can get more info on arsenal markings for these? It is dated 1954 and has an arrow in a triangle in a circle on the receiver cover. Now I will have to save up for the Mini 30. Does anybody legally own a MAS 49/56 in CA? I am still interested in one of these if they are legal here.

Well I bought the cleanest SKS I have seen so far and it turned out to be an Izhevsk arsenal unit, it's a little rarer than what I was looking for, so I guess shooting the f*#k out of it wouldn't be too wise of a thing to do. I guess I'll have to find a Romanian or Chinese beater. If anyone else is interested the French MAS that I was asking about, it is legal in CA as long as you remove the grenade launcher attachment.

In either Gunlist or Shotgun News, I saw an add for an AR-15 looking rifle, but it was similar to the T-48 shown, it had a box (non-detachable) ten-round magazine.

It looks like you have to open it with the pin in order to reload it. The ad said "CA legal." I think the receiver only was $179.
You'd need a kit, say $400 to complete it.

Maybe someone will come up with a flat-top upper that will take strippers for the AR-15.

Again, legislation spurs innovation.

I don't like the weapon either. However, I believe any disdain should be directed at the California state government.
