Every time I hear about some a__hole blasting innocent people in a mall or some kid executing his parents it makes me feel like we climbed yet another run on the ladder to a complete ban. Obviously while complete ban would be the absolute WORST possible way to try to stop gun violence, it's what the powers-that-be will eventually do, be it in 1 year, 5 years, 25 years, whatever.

The question is, what can we as responsible gun owners do to help stop the illegal sale of illegal firearms to the scumbags while still enyoying our rights, our sport? Is there anything at all we can do?

Nope.

Judges want to keep letting the little darlings out of jail, don't want to send the 'pore and disadvantaged to the pokey for violent crime. They just want to come after legal gun owners.

I've come to the conclusion there isn't anything we can do. Try starting some impeachment actions against nincompoop judges, I suppose, but I don't hold out much hope for that.

The criminal justice system isn't about punishment or deterrence any longer. Get used to it, unless you want to move to that Arizona Sheriff's jurisdiction. What's his name? Arpaio? I suspect gun crime in his jurisdiction is much lower than most other places.

I hope the "good guys" outnumber the bad...with that in mind, about all we can do is return fire, if fired upon (and don't miss). 1 other thing...fight to get rid of "victim disarmament zones"...thats where these shootings take place...remove those and these mass shootings will be far less frequent. And some of us are "anal" about the "concealed" part of concealed carry...I know in some places its illegal to carry open...but I don't fall for the BS myself. If they know you're there, the majority of these "bad guys" will likely move on to easier prey. We are armed...yet we are still forced to hide like sheep in a lot of places. Thats not the proper mindset.

First of all, I'd say most guns used by these dirtbags are probably stolen in the first place as I doubt they are purchased legally. The gun checks would stop these sales, so the politico's are just going after law abiding folks.

Second, not that it worked a darn in Calif, but we do have the "Use a gun, go to prison" rule that states you get more time if you use a gun in the commission of a crime. It may deter some, so you can contact your local politicos and suggest that. Biggest problem is, most of these dirtbags are just, if not more, at home in prison as they are out.

I know, use a gun, get a 6' hole in the ground- free of charge!!

The only help for California, Illinois, and New York City is for every pro-gun person to move somewhere else...and don't give those a**holes your tax dollars.

Along some of these same lines...

We can promote responsible gun ownership in educating our fellow gun owners about security. I'm sure most of us know (or have known) people who store guns in a less-than-secure manner. These are many of the same people who are contributing to the pool of stolen weapons that these scumbags are using.

In terms of the "Use a gun, go to prison" laws, you should be careful about the wording, because these laws can backfire on legal gun users. We have that law here too, but it creates a situation where a CCW holder could potentially find him/herself facing a 10-year mandatory sentence for a simple misunderstanding.

And of course, though there are certainly reasons to be pessimistic about the results, you can vote, and encourage others to do the same.

Vote for people who support mandatory sentencing

Vote for people who support "3 strikes and your out" (1 or 2 strikes is better)

Vote for people who believe in personal responsibility and holding people
accountable for their actions.

Vote for people who believe in reforming not just throwing more money at
our education system.

Vote for people who support our second amendment rights and understand
crime is people related not gun related.

I agree. A complete ban will not occur.

Answer to your question - carry our guns. Vote pro 2A. Education.

Try to educate more non-gun folks that we are not racist, supremist groups that want to take over everything and shoot people. Because that is the image that is shown on tv quite often, and you'd be surprised how many non-gun people believe it.

A good place to start is within your own home making sure firearms are properly secured. It is a real shame when a 15 year old wipes out his family with his father's handgun due to a disagreement with dad.

Excellent question, but I don't think there's a lot we can do. Since as responsible gun owners we're already obeying the law, esp. not making straw purchases for felons and the mentally ill, and we're storing them safely.

The only thing I can think of that's not already covered is to make arrangements for our firearms in our wills. Most of our guns are going to outlive us by decades with proper maintenance. How often do you hear about "his widow asked me to do something about his collection". Relatives don't always show the best judgment. Think about that son-in-law or nephew who might end up with a box of your pistols when you're gone. Specifically leave them to someone responsible, or leave instructions for sale through trustworthy, legal outlets.

Do everything you can, call, write, email or tell your Legislators, media, anti gunners etc. about all the myths and fallacies that drive the current beliefs and unworkable solutions currently in vogue. Judicially hammer gun violators. Keep criminals in jail for longer periods. Show them how the great majority of the shooting catastrophies could have been prevented or at least minimized by the presence of legal gun carriers.

Start electing conservative constitutionalist judges, DA's, sheriff's, reps, senators, governors, presidents, ect. that won't be shy about coming down on criminals and allow you to exercise your rights. None of this Romney, McCain nonsense.

Don't vote for left leaning, tree hugging, excuse making, feel good political candidates. They will nominate judges who will operate the same way and the revolving door of justice will continue to spin.

The ONLY way we're going to get on top of this is to hold everyone accountable for his or her actions. No more excuses, no more hand holding, no more slaps on the wrists. Time to get tough.

If you do the crime, you will do the time.

In order to return to peaceful freedom in this country, where violent crime is reduced without turning the US into a police state, these two things would work fastest to bring that about:

1) Stop paying unmarried women to have babies.

2) Legalize drugs.

On the first point, men feel no pressure anymore to marry or take responsibility if they get a woman pregnant because that woman can go on welfare. The government takes the place of the daddy. A child raised without a father is more likely to become a criminal. Then, we put all these single moms in public housing, grouping all of these fatherless children together in one place, which further increases the likelihood of gang behavior and peer pressure for criminal acts. Thanks to the "war on poverty", more than 75% of black children are now born out of wedlock. Around here (Raleigh/Durham), 90% of the suspects/perps and murder victims are black males under 25.

On the second point, prohibition has never worked. Jack Daniels and Jim Beam are competitors, but they don't have turf shoot-outs because their products are legal. I've never used illegal drugs, but the war on drugs should end. Plus, before 9/11, the war on drugs was the number one reason used by Govco to take away our freedoms. (Now, of course, the war on terror is the reason used to take away our freedoms.)

No amount of educating or legislating is gong to stop the occasional slaughter of innocents by nut cases.

1. Lock your guns in a secure place when not carrying them on your person- most guns used in crimes are stolen, not peurchased (Or stolen and then sold black market).
2. see above- carry your gun on your person.

I would say that being a responsible gun owner is doing more in year to prevent violent crime of all sorts than 10 left-wing socialist will do in their lifetimes.

I agree that legalizing drugs would take the wind out of alot of gangs' sails.

However, if you go that route, I think you also have to legalize prostitution, and gambling everywhere. There are too many different angles for criminals to take if only drugs are legalized. And, it opens several cans of proverbial worms.
