What happens when SS galls?

Could someone please explain what happens when stainless steel frames and slides gall? Any pic would be a nice touch.

Galling occurs when two metal surfaces which are to alike in hardness, and are both generally softer than ideal, rub against each other with enough friction to cause mutual gouging of their mutual surfaces, and mutual exchange of surface material.

Proper lubrication can help alleviate the problem, but proper metalergy is a better solution.

Pampers explained it pretty well. The best "layman" description I've heard is that it is more of a "smearing" of the metal. If you've ever seen a galled gun, this term describes it accurately.
