When I cock the slide, engage the thumb safety and pull on the trigger, I hear a slight "tick" when I take off the safety and push the hammer down.Obviously the hammer or sear are jumping around a little. What else could this be and can I fix it myself? Could this be a safety hazard at some point?
thanks larry

seabass, you have a misfit safety. The sound you're hearing is the sear reseating into the hammer hooks after being pushed partly off the hammer by your pulling the trigger with the safety on. You need to get the safety repaired ASAP. The safety, if properly fit, shouldn't allow any sear movement when engaged.

Thanks Don W. ! I really appreciate the timely solution . As you probably know too well, 1911 owners worry about their babies until they are fixed. I take it from your post that letting this go is not a good idea. Can a pistolsmith re-cut the old safety or will it take a new part? thanks, larry

Don is correct with his evaluation. You may need another safety, as it is possible that too much material was removed from the internal lug. However, it may simply need to be reshaped slightly - in which case you will be able to keep your current safety.

In any case, have it checked out.

Seabass, A competent smith can build up the "nub" on the safety and recut it, but depending on what they charge for that service, a new safety may be cheaper. And yes, you're correct that it needs to be taken care of. In a worse case scenario, engaging the safety and pulling the trigger after some wear occurs can let the hammer fall when the safety is taken "off safe" - not a good thing.
