All right, all you pistol mechanics out there (and experienced owners as well):

I'm relatively new to 1911s and was just wondering about this. Let's say for the sake of argument that I pick up a Kimber Custom Stainless Target this weekend (this might just happen, 'minds me, I need to make a phone call). Let's further say I feed this critter a varied diet for awhile to find out what it likes to eat. Let's further say I put maybe 500 to 1000 pills down the pipe and get a few FTF, FTE, slide-stop problems, maybe the odd stovepipe (what REALLY causes that, BTW?).

Now comes the hypothetical/theoretical part. Let's dream that I've got an extra grand laying around to smooth the bugs out and maybe make this animal feel better in my hand (I don't have the jack yet, that's why this is speculative at this point).

What would you do for me for $1000? Or would I be better off starting over? I'm making the assumption that I like and want to keep this pistol and must have, among other things, a reliability job done on it. Oh, and please try to remember, I'm not intimately familiar with all the terminology yet, treat me like the dull child I am.

Thanks, all!

I'd say that before we theorize on all that (to cover all of those "possible" little problems - we'd have to write a smallish book). Shoot it and let everyone know what is does. It might work and you won't have to spend anything (that's the best hypothetical that I can think of
). Good Luck!!

Iceberg,I had my Kimber Compact customized.I think I paid like $630 for the standard blued Kimber Compact. At the time I was working for a FFL dealer so I got all my parts at wholesale which saved me a bunch of money.I replaced everything except the frame, slide, barrel, guide rod and sights.I replaced all those crappy MIM parts and cheap composite MSH and trigger.I used mostly Ed Brown Hardcore and Wilson BP parts. The trigger is Videcki. After all the customizing I had it Parkerized. It turned out to be a sweet gun.If it was'nt for the money I saved in parts and the access of cheap labor from the in store gunsmith the thing probably would have ended up costing me $1200.For another 3-4-5 hundred dollars I could get a complete custom pistol.IMO Kimber makes very good production 1911's but most the small parts are junk. You can certainly have your Kimber custimized as you go and as your budget allows. But in the end it will still say Kimber on the slide.
