I would like to blue a 1911 with polished sides and matte on the top and bottom. Can anyone please recommend the proper aluminum oxide grit size for this?
Well, for the flat sides of the slide I use 320 grit to remove the finish and any corrosion/scratches. Then I jump up to 500 or 600 to polish. Then 1000 grit, and then to 1500 grit. All this with honing oil on a piece of hard plastic or glass. Sometimes I use automotive rubbing compound or polishing compound if I wanna get REAL slick, but that's your call...
I don't know about the top or other matte sections.
I'm sure others will have their own advice shortly...
