I'm new to the forum (hi), and relatively new to pistols. That said, I want to soon be purchasing a 1911-style handgun.

I would like to buy something that I can tinker with, that will accept most (or all preferably) aftermarket parts, barrels, grips, etc.. I am also a cheap bastard. I'm the kind of guy who would rather spend $700 on a Makarov, S&W M36 and a Bersa than one HK, if you know what I mean.

I'd also like some general info on the 1911, I looked in the FAQ section, didn't answer my questions. Thanks.

While parts ARE replaceable, and you can tune, it's much harder to get slide/frame tightness good than anything else. If you're looking to buy a gun with potentially cheaper internals (to be replaced), try to find an instance of it with good fit otherwise.

IMHO.

Battler.
