Which weapon is more reliable???

What is the most reliable combat firearm, a Colt 45, government model or a Colt 45, combat commander model.

Is one inherently more reliable than the other after being customized by a great gunsmith. Back your answer up with a short & sweet statement why?

Thanks to all who responds and have a great 4th of July.

Fraternally yours

Hi Jimmy,
I have had all the mentioned arms.
Reliablity is the same out of the box in my experiance. Very, very good. Accuracy depends on how good you are as a shooter. Commander has a shorter sight radius so for some its not so easy. Commander is easier to carry(shorter barrel)-
So my answer would be:
1) for carry - commander
2) for target or open carry (hunting) - GI 1911 or government model (same thing, ones commercial other is issue war surplus)
3) a base gun for a Good smith - 1991A1

Cheers
Ty

The 5" Government is closer to the original design...

...If you wanna' go any farther than that, you are on your own...

I beleive the easiest one to tune the extractor is the 5" goverment model ,
IMHO the gov model is the more reliable.
Hmmmmmm, I've owned 'em all, and all I have now are Commander size versions.

I think they run as good as any, if you take care of them like you should.
Shane,

I'm curious as to why you have only commander size 1911s. I've recently migrated to the commander size guns because I like the balance, pointability, don't see much difference in recoil compared to the gov't model, and it just feels more natural in my hand. After handling my full-size guns they are starting to feel tippy--too much front end.
Having owned both, I find it difficult to make much of a commentary with respect to inherent reliability. Logic would seem to suggest that that GM has the edge here, but I've not seen it play out this way in actual usage. Both are fully worthy of consideration.

As with several of our peers, I do tend to prefer the Combat Commander's form factor for carry purposes, but this is not to say that the GM doesn't have a few merits all its own.

For instance, one-handed charging (in the old cavalry style) is not possible with the Commanders, and the average shooter is probably going to find it easier to shoot the larger Government Model. The GM is less prone to muzzle whip, potentially more accurate, somewhat easier to tune up, and suited to a wider variety of applications; whereas the CC tends to be optimized for carry and convenience.

It really depends upon what you intend to do with your gun, but I'd feel exceedingly well-armed with either one. How's that for a non-committal response? On second thought, perhaps that tells you what you wanted to know after all.

Howard, your reasons for liking the Commander reflect my opinions perfectly.

I also can index multiple targets faster and stop on a dime with the shorter (and less mass) slide. The lower slide mass also allows me quicker double taps and hammers (although only a timer would reflect the smaller interval of split times).

The slightly shorter sight radius allows me to align the front and rear sights faster as well.

And they just look cool.
