Yeah, They do serve a purpose. They make for a quick positive mag. change specialy when you do a tactical mag. change (when the slide is in battery). I like the CMC promag bumper, it's just right. They're a MUST if your 1911 has a mag well. Some say it cushes the mag as they fall to the ground, but they won't always land on the pad. Hope this helps....
Why base pads.
What purpose do base pads serve, are they desireable for competitive shooting?
