Why I will never own a .50 BMG

I like to shoot. I don't "train" for a zombie invasion. I am not particularly afraid of a global disaster and I am not overly concerned about thugs robbing me. I am careful and aware but I like to shoot because, well it's fun and challenging. So, on a boring day with little to do I looked up the price of .50 BMG ammo. If I had a BMG as my primary plinker over the past 15 years or so, looking at how many .22LR, 9mm, 45ACP, 45 Colt, 41 and 44 mag, 30-30 and .308 I have put down range, it would have cost me about $400,000.00. Nearly a half a million dollars. I am glad they don't make an officers model Barrett for CC.

Once I hit 70 I realized that 5.56 and 7.62x39 were enough for me.

The largest big boomer I own is in .30-'06. I have no interest in anything bigger than that. I'll let the neighbors deal with any tanks that might rumble through my neighborhood.

Gave my 375 H&H Mag to grandson as he likes cannons. Bought gun for a Alaska hunting trip that was done in by hip replacement. Then spine surgery kinda put a damper on shooting such.

A very well designed muzzle break can make a 50 BMG recoil tolerable in theory.
For now turning 70 at the end of this week, I will stick with my M-1s and my P-14 I modified to fire 300 Winchester Magnum.

I have no place to shoot one.

I would like to play with a Barrett semi-auto. I do have 2 100rd cans of linked .50BMG in case the opportunity ever arises.

There is a machine gun range with a whole slew of rentable rock-n-roll toys a few hours drive though.

No desire, no interest, and no way! Had enough of that during my castle-storming days. Not only are the damned things expensive, but they are also obnoxiously loud and recoil heavy - brake or no brake. And to mkk41's point, you need the right place to shoot them. A 500-yard range is a waste of time. Anything less is simply absurd. Also, a .50 BMG will make short work of the typical man-made berm you find at most ranges. It's essentially a 'braggin' rights' sort of firearm. Practical applications are very specialized and, besides, after a few rounds, the fun factor tends to dissipate rather quickly.

Well, even though .50 BMG wasn't always four bucks a round, I doubt anyone ever used one as their primary plinker. Mostly 50s are owned by guys who want everyone to know they have a 50.

I shot one once, some guy at the range had a .50 BMG bolt action rifle. It was a 50 barrel on a Mauser 98 receiver with about twenty pounds of wood under it. "Hey, anyone want to shoot a 50?" Lots of people looking at their shoes. "Sure" I said. Big boom, big push, no big deal.

I can't imagine ever wanting to own one. In fact Illinois' latest stroke of legal genius prohibits ownership of fifty cal rifles. So, that's a factor...

A friend had a British Boyes .55 anti-tank ''rifle'' that was converted to .50 BMG. He said the awful design made felt recoil 10x more painful than it needed to be.
M2HB or it ain't worth it.

No point to them, unless yer targeting police and ftroop/feeb/irs APC's: they won't touch a tank with todays armor..

Now, if you win a trip to a Dinosaur Hunt, that might work.
In the early 1990’s the people in my office asked the question: what is a 50 BMG? At the next gun show I bought a round! That impressed them - a lot. I keep it on top of a safe to remind me I can’t afford the M2 to shoot it! I read that Dillon puts on a show on some property he owns in Arizona for invited guest!

The fact that states like CA and IL have banned them, despite there being absolutely NO cases in recent memory where anybody was murdered with one shows just how the anti-gunners think. It doesn't even have to be an actual problem for them to ban it.

I did get to shoot one of those one time. A hundred round belt actually. It was quite a hoot, but it kind of walked off the matt somewhat while I was doing so despite it's weight. I could not believe it when the owner actually reached over and grabbed it by the barrel to reposition it after I shot the hundred round belt. Bet he never does that again.

As for owning a .50 BMG myself. I have enough expensive habits to last me for a while. I do not even shoot my .338 that much. I do like to shoot my .300 H&H magnum from time to time though.

As a big follower of military history, I'm pretty sure BMG is an acronym for big mother*** gun. Don't quote me on that...
