I walked into "1911Haven" in Chandler, AZ not to long ago looking to purchase a couple more Wilson mag's. I like the 8-shot model and so does my Kimber Custom. I asked the owner if he stocked them and his reaction was odd, to say the least. Seems he feels the Wilson 8-shot stainless mag. might be the work of the devil or something. So, NO! he didn't stock them. Honestly, the guy spooked me so I did not press him for details. Has anyone had a bad experience with them? Have you ever seen a reaction from shop owners or smiths like this one?

Well, perhaps not the work of the devil but ...

My instructor, and his staff, have had some bad experiences with Wilsons. IIRC it was the follower wearing to a point it no longer locked the weapon open after the last round was fired.

He currently recommends that his students and customers go with Chip McCormick Power Mags. I took his advice and they have performed flawlessly in my Springfield.

...and on the other hand, I've got thousands of rounds thru my Wilson 8 rounders, with no problems what so ever. This is the only magazine I've used that I can say this about.

Wilson 8 rd. mags are my choice.

have a number of 7 rd wilsons i used to shoot ipsc with and now a number of 8 roundsed for carry and idpa - never a problem in feeding and as you need to test mags/ammo/gun periodically for carry, if the slide won't hold open get a new follower and use them some more

I have 11 Wilson 8 rounders that have 10,000 rds+ total thru them. Yesterday the first problem showed up. When I seated the mag on a quick mag change the base plate came off. The mag still fired all of the rounds without a hitch. It looks like the plastic edges have worn a little. I will replace it with an aluminum base plate. I traded or sold off all of my Chip mags after encountering several problems mostly with the 10 rounders. After this IDPA season, I will probably replace springs and followers.

Lodraw,

Robert at 1911 Heaven is a little odd. You can never tell exactly how he feels from day to day. I've seen the guy go through so many different mood swings, that it makes me wonder if he is on some meds. He was probably trying to talk you into buying his "own" 1911 mags. He's done the same to me before. BTW, he used to carry Wilson mags. I've even bought some from him.

My Wilson mags work flawlessly. They are all I use in my 1911's, except when practicing malfunctions (then I use shooting stars or the mags that come with Kimber pistols)

I have 8 Wilson 47D's. On my last range trip, I discovered that 3 out of the 8 would not lock open the gun (Springfield TRP) after the last shot. Either they need new followers or new springs. They have not been used that much, either.:(

I think my next 1911 magazine purchase will be Tripp Research Cobrachrome mags, or maybe McCormick.

There are some individual pistols that are finicky about Wilson 8-round mags, but run fine with Wilson 7-round mags. I have one, and when I called Wilson to ask about converting them to 7 rounds, the Wilson CS guy told me that he has a pistol with the same quirk.

I had a couple of 8 round magazines that were not locking my slide open. I contacted Wilson Combat and was told that either the spring or the follower may need to be replaced. I looked them over but didn't see anything really wrong with them.
The magazines are pretty new but they were getting dirty and I think that may have been the reason for the problem. I switched to a couple of other Wilson 8 round mags the next time to the range and had no issues.
The design of the follower on the 8 round is quite a bit different than a 7 round Wilson due to the fact that the 8 round has to allow one more cartridge in the mag. The 8 round mag follower is indented to allow for this while the 7 rounder follower actually the opposite, it is raised.
For my next trip to the range I think I'll clean that ones that were acting up and see if that fixes the problem. I'm guessing it will.

Wilson is it for me....I have 2 10 rounders, and 8 47D's. Over 7500 rounds Not a SINGLE problem. They've been dropped and never ever cleaned.

Both my CQB and Tactical Pro II have issues with CMC mag's.
