Fianlly decided to try cast bullets. what do you guys use with 200swc for range sessions...what OAL?

I recently switched to Hodgdon Titegroup for my .45ACP loads. I use the same load in practice that I do in competition.

Here is my W231 load

5.8gr W231
200gr SWC-lead H&G #68 design
OAL 1.250-1.255"
Winchester primers and whatever brass

This load makes major. I am now using 4.8gr of Titegroup to get the same result.

I used to use W231 for my 200 gr SWC load - 5.3 grains, chronos at 825 fps, but found 231 much too dirty.

If you want a great 200 gr SWC powder try 5.2 grains of Hercules (Alliant) Red Dot. Chronos at 850 fps and is very accurate in every 1911 I've ever seen it used in. I use Win large pistol primers with my loads.

How about Win 231 with 230 gr total metal jacket(west coast bullet)? What load duplicates a factory load. I've tried 5.7 grains with a CQB compact and and i'm getting a lot of stove pipes. any suggestions? Thanks.

5.7 grains of powder makes 165 PF for me, 5.8 grains to be safe
1.245 to 1.255 OAL
.002 taper crimp
16 pound recoil spring

Accept the fact that SWCs do not feed as reliably as hard ball. I got really frustrated with FTF when I would accidentally knock the top round in a magazine out of alignment during competitive reloads.

Well the "factory" loads run from 830 to 850 fps. The most common listing I see from history of development of the cartridge is 850 fps.

According to my references, this would require 6.0 of Win 231, giving you about 848-849 fps.

Could be you're just a smidgen light?

My favorite load is 4.5 of Win 231 under the West Coast 230 FMJ for target.

For IPSC I run 5.0 Win 231 under the same 230 FMJ. This gives 718 fps.

5.5 grain W231, Winchester standard primer, and 200gr H&G 168 style swc. Haven't tried titegroup yet. Reddot will bridge when used with some brands of powder measures, be careful.

Got away from 231 to smokey/dirty/Flash, I
use 4.9gr of WST, 200gr.SWC, WLP primers & mixed brass, they leave the barrel at 870 fps. Very accurate. I leave about 1.5mm of shoulder sticking out of case. In my pistol this combo has never had any FTF.

OAL = 1.250"-1.255"
Crimp = .469"-.471"
I use a Lee Factory Crimp Die.
Old range brass with Winchester primers.

Thanks guys, I'm going to start at 5. gr
and 1.185 OAL per Speer, then work my way
up and around your loads. I'm looking for
a light load that I can use for 300 round range sessions. I get flinchy with rocket rounds. Regretably I can only muster one range trip per week anymore so I have to shoot butt-loads when I can!

5.3 grains with an OAL of 1.20" will make major (barely). It's safer to use 5.5 grains with the same OAL.

This is a shorter bullet than the #68 style, hence the shorter OAL.

Are you saying 200 grain SWCs at 1.185 OAL? Huh?

When loading semiwadcutters,be sure you leave part of the bullets shoulder above the case mouth.This somewhat limits your OAL.I doubt you'll be able to load any at 1.185".
You will probably end up at 1.250" roughly.
