Wolf jam

My TRP jammed last night on the 64th round of Wolf ammo. the interesting thing is that the slide was only a mm from closing completly and after messing with it it finally closed. BUT, IT WAS STILL JAMMED! I messed with it some more and got the hammer safely down. I decided to field strip my weapon while it was jammed and notice that the two-piece guide rod had come loose. The slide remained stuck, though, and I had to get a pistol smith to unjam it. The 'smith gave me a scolding for using "cheap" ammo and said that Wolf ammo will "tear that gun up".

Is Wolf ammo best used as glock food (those cockroaches will eat anything!) or was the guide rod the real problem?

What kind of damage to the performance can a bad jam like this do to a 1911?
