Someone has tried 16 1/2 and 17 1/2 Wolff variable power recoil springs? Are they satisfactory for normal power (factory Ball ammo) ammunitions, and how well they compare to standard Colt 16lbs recoil spring?

I have used them and they work fine, it's in my 1911 now.

I bought the variable because the gun shop didn't have any regular springs at the time.

Typical of the 1911, I've read very convincing discussions on the merits of both in a non-compensated single stack 45. Some gunsmiths recommend them and others do not.

I do believe it allows the slide to retract a bit easier when doing a check. I don't notice any difference when shooting, but I shoot only 'standard' loadings or less- nothing hot!

I just put the 18.5 variable in my series I Kimber, and function is perfect.
I shoot everything from light range loads to full power fighting loads and function is fine with all.

I've used both 17.5 and 18.5 Wolff variable springs. My gun has been flawless with both. I've also used 18.5 standard springs without a hitch. I do run into trouble with Shok-Buffs, though. Neither of my guns like them very well.

I shoot primarily 230grn standard loadings.
