I just picked up a pound of WST to experiment with. I usually use Red Dot and was not too thrilled with AA # 2 or VV 350.

I will be using 200 gr RNFP bullets, either straight lead or plated. Any suggested loads for this powder?

Thanks!

I use 4.3 with 200 SWC. Awesome target load and functions all my 1911s. I see no reason why this load wouldn't work.

Did some testing with WST and 200g LRNFP in my 4" SW 625. Everything from 4.3g up worked fine. I was able to shoot the tightest groups (1" @ 25 yards) with a load of 4.7g of WST.

Thanks

I'll be using this load in a 5" 625 and a 5" SVI (Gov. model) for USPSA and pin & plate shoots, so I'll need a power factor of at least 165.

I'm guessing 4.5 should do it easily, but will work up in .2 gr increments to see where the "sweet spot" is. ;)

The test target that came with my custom 1911 was shot with 5.1gr WST under a 200gr LSWC. The 25 yard, bench-rested, 5-shot group was 0.580".

Needless to say, I have not been able to duplicate that precision with any WST load, or any other load for that matter. WST is undoubtedly a good .45acp powder, but I found it to be no better than W231, Clays, or Titegroup.

Good shooting.

Like you I recently started experimenting with WST from W231. I wanted to try a lighter bullet and a new powder. Not sure why because the 230gr FMJ and W231 worked fine. Always looking for the pefect combination I guess.

Using 5" bbl and 4.9gr WST behind a 200gr FPJ RN bullet I get 842fps making a 168 power force for IDPA.

Winchester Reloading Manual 16th ed. suggests;
Grains FPS PSI
4.7 825 16400
5.3 890 20000

Also used up some W231 at 5.6gr with the same bullet for the same fps and pf.

As always, work up your own loads and be safe.

5" pistol using Winchester primers, 200 grain cast bullets in mixed brass. 4.2 grains WST makes a nice 720 fps average softball load. 4.9 grains WST makes 872 fps average.

"...4.9 grains WST makes 872 fps average."

Is this load measured on a chrono? Seems abit quick for 4.9gr of WST.
