What is really starting to annoy me is all these repro M1911A1s floating around out there, yet still nobody has taken a decent P-I-C-T-U-R-E of one yet!

From what I have heard, it looks nice but certainly won't fool anybody who has a REAL '43 Colt.

I picked one up this afternoon - price through my local dealer was "only" $850.

Fit and finish are much nicer than I expected. The parkerizing is a beautiful black, and the checkering on the slide stop lever, mag release, safety, and hammer is sharp and crisp.

Pistol only came with one mag. Called Colt - they said some (mistakenly) went out with one mag only. Second mag will be shipped after Colt's summer vacation break.

The pistol is very tight - no barrel or slide play. Trigger is VERY nice, too.
I saw one at the gun show in Alexandria, LA this past weekend. Price was $869. I looked but was not brave enough to buy as our anniversary is today. A gun purchase at this point would be a suicidal gesture.
I read a lengthy Post on another Forum from a guy who had his dealer order him the only 2 1911A1's he could find. The customer paid $995 apiece for them. He took them home, took one out of the box. He then wiped about a pint of oil off it and detail stripped it. The man said the MSH Pin is plastic, The internal parts were very rough and the color finish varied between the parts. He also found numerous flaws in the 'cast' parts. There were several exterior scratches on the slide and receiver. There was only 1 magazine per gun (there is supposed to be 2)and the magazines were blue instead of parkerized. The sights were "Small" WW1 1911 vintage. Needles to say he was very disappointed and returned both pistols for a full refund - $25.00....He commented that "They weren't worth $550 let alone the $1000 price Colt has put on them" MSRP.......
Gumby, I used to be from Wichita, how are things?

Getting to your friends report, I'm a little doubtful as to his veracity. Points:

- Colt has never used a plastic mainspring housing pin on any 1911. It would indeed be odd to offer such an innovation on a WWII Reproduction.
- Since the parts were (just like the originals) probably parkerized at different times and in different batches they can indeed vary in color - JUST LIKE the wartime originals did. Most US GI guns built during WWII had color variations in the parkerizing of individual parts - this is indeed "how it was".
- Scratches? Who was handling it when it got scratched? I would have refused to buy a scratched collectable. All of ours have a nice, smooth finish in the original wax paper wrap.
- Ever look at GI 1911A1 internal parts? They usually show tool marks, etc. As long as they gauge and work ok, the Army was happy. The gun sounds more "GI" all the time.
- The A1 sights were indeed still relatively small, but they were a Partridge squared cut rather than the rather thin "U" shape of the original 1911. Our guns accurately reflect this.

Your Mileage may vary, I guess, but none of our four guns would seem to validate your friend's claims.

Warmly, if Curiously, Col. Colt

Sights on the WW1 1911 were U notch with a half-moon tapered front. In 1924 it was changed to a parallel-sided front. In 1943 it was further changed to a 1/10" square nothc rear and 1/10" serrated ramp front. You can see examples at http://www.geocities.com/M1911_M1911A1/sights.html

Damn the torpedoes,,, yeah, got mine today.

RickB - Checkered confirmed.
Col Colt - Collector value aside, mine will become a shooter.

I do intend to take care of it, and don't intend to do any of the mods that I've joked about - gonna leave it as is, shoot 500 or so, and see what might be needed as far as reliability. I haven't even field stripped it yet but all "signs" I normally check for indicate thumbs up. No it's not real USGI, yes it's about $400 more than a 1991A1. Worth it? We'll see... I'll be posting something in "Range Reports" this weekend. Sorry about the ramble,,, I'm somewhat excited

I gotta get one when I have money too. And no it won't be a shooter. I may just lay one away and pick up in a month. This is for the reason that I love Colt and don't desire a real 11A1. But I want a repo of a past age from Colt for having the foresight. To give to its collection fans. What they don't yet know what they want. No selling a guy like me Colt. I'm on the wagon for life, and proud of myself for it.

We've already seen that picture, Bulldawg.

What I want to see are high-res pictures showing the markings, sort of like the ones on my site of REAL GI Colts!

I saw Havoc's today. Well, parts of it! The pics do not do it justice. The finish is beautiful. One of the nicest parkerized finishes I've ever seen.
Ya know, DSK, that picture didn't work for me until I went to your Geocities site and found it there. I guess geocities won't let you link your pictures from anywhere else anymore.
Range Report (Long) posted where else... Range Reports

Bottom line...

I'm really starting to hate Geocities. I noticed even when I provide a link it won't pop up, yet it will if you access it from my Web page. I guess I might have to break down and pay the $$$ for a dedicated site instead wasting time with a freebie.

Anyway, here's the gun in question again, only from a site that I KNOW works:

(this is a real 1944 Colt, not the repro.)

dsk - wish I could fax ya my new one and have ya look it over. No camera for me anytime soon... toy budget blasted to h311 and gone!
I'd just say mail the gun to me so I could take some shots, but two problems:

1. You probably wouldn't trust me to give it back.

2. USPS has apparently lost an Ithaca that was being shipped to me. At least I'm losing hope of ever seeing it. FFL and C&R holders, have your guns sent ONLY by UPS, even if you don't like the heavy tariff. At least it will get there!

We've not lost anything through fed-ex or USPS yet since we switched from UPS. UPS lost countless stuff, including one box of guns that ended up on some guys lawn.
They all suck, you're better off driving cross-country and picking the stuff up yourself :)
dsk - I like Geocities for the web space, but they peeved me with their policy regarding posting pics. They now forbid it because it bypasses all the advertising that makes 'em money.

For pic posting, I've been using www.msn.com , www.hunting-pictures.com , and most recently www.clubphoto.com . I think Club Photo's a winner... For now, at least.

Oh, and here's another one I found: http://photoasa.com/

The Ithaca isn't officially "lost" yet, but according to the tracking number it's been taking a tour of the country for the past week (it was sent Priority) which tells me they don't know where to send it. The sickening thing is I can't even get ahold of a live human outside my own post office to go tell them to find it and send it in the right direction. At least UPS and Fed Ex can better track their packages.
