The .45 will certainly work, but I understand many don't think it's a good choice. Okay I can agree that there are better choices but I can say there are worse choices too. A 250gr harcast at 900 fps will cut end to end through a deer at 100yds, but some think a 230gr JHP at 950 fps will barely work at 25 yds? 50 yds? The truth is that deer aren't hard to kill and ANY service caliber (yes including the 9mm) will put one down quick with proper shot placement. They're not ideal, no, but they can work.

Another option too is to shoot .45 Super through the 1911. You might want to put a stronger recoil spring in it, but the Super offers a lot depending on your needs. Stuff from Underwoods and Buffalo Bore isn't full power but it's not weak either. I load .45 Super up in my comped .45 to shoot 250gr XTP's to 1300 fps.

But back to the ACP, yes it can work and will with proper shot placement. I'd stick to 230gr loads or there are a few 255gr loads from Buffalo Bore (925 fps) and maybe Underwood too. You want penetration and the heavier bullets give it more than lighter bullets.
