I have a Springfield 5" SS 1911 in 9mm with approximately 5,000 rounds through it that I shoot IDPA with. It has primarily been feed factory 115gr FMJ ammo with a Wolff 12# variable spring up until now. I just got my reloader set up for 9mm and loaded some 147gr moly coated lead bullets with a flat tip bullet from Black Bullets International. The first match with the new ammo resulted in 4-5 failures to go into battery after doing a reload. A shooting buddy suggested a 14 or 16# spring. So I changed the recoil spring to a Wolff 14# spring and it reduced the failures to 1-2. What I'm worried about is overspringing the gun and doing more damage than good. Is this a valid concern or would it be okay to run the 14 or even a 16# spring in a 9mm 1911? Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and answer.
