A bump in the night...

Unfortunately if you went out and confronted them you likely WOULD be charged, as you can't chase after someone and then claim self-defense. That's why these thugs are so bold... they're already being criminals so they have nothing to lose.
For me, if you are in shotgun range of my front porch you are 300+ feet from the road and jumped 2 or more fences and a locked gate. With that, there's 3 acres of creek ravine covered in blackberries and a backhoe calling yer name...

If they can even find the place. I am a half mile from the nearest public road. The place at the end of the road. In 26 years of living here I have only one person show up unexpectedly. They were just a lost hunter. The back of my place is six miles of thick forest to the next road which is really a small dirt road.
... AND, you own a tractor with a backhoe.

When it goes "bump in the night", you need to keep yourself and your family safe. That said, there are valid reasons for keeping a shovel in your truck and maybe a bag or two of quick lime.

Lime is okay, I prefer double bagged Lye.
