Brass cleaning pops up occasionally on the various reference sources. Reading folks input makes it abundantly clear some are absolutely convinced their system/method is the best. In this case the question was asked what we did; so I’ll offer my not very secret system. The key to my wet system was found on a video and makes sense to me….it is simple chemistry. You select the cleaning agent/soap of your choice and volume based on your container size. The solution will be alkaline. Use an acid agent to return the mix to a
balanced pH of 7 or close to that which keeps the brass shiny. pH test strips can be located on Amazon or in any search engine.
I use:
and small media from Southern Shine. This stuff will get in primer pockets and flash holes.
The media is a bit of a challenge when you rinse and separate from brass, but after a couple of uses I got the hang of it.
I use a Frankfort tumbler (and dryer). I use 1 gal of water, 6 oz of ZEP, about 1 1/2 teaspoons of Lemishine. Check the pH and turn it on. I do a primary wash (no media) after de priming. That ensures my cases have no debris in the sizing die. After I have done all the brass rituals, I rewash with media. This is definitely not for high speed folks in a hurry but if you are unhappy with your system, it is an alternative for your long haul and precision Sunday brass.
I am sure there are plenty of other fine soap agents out there. I found the ZEP on the video I mentioned. Lowes and Home Depot sell it for about $10/gal. The Lemi Shine is at Walmart in the dish soap area. Rinsing and sorting brass from media will also clean fingernails.
