OK.
Well now that I have become a 1911 addict I thought I solved my CCW debate and chose a Commanders slide and Officers frame but then I really screwed up!
How did I do this you ask?

I went to a couple local shops and while poking around I picked up a Bobtail .45 (which I had never held before). After holding it, fondling it I no longer saw a real benifit to carrying a officers frame as the bobtail makes it as easy to conceal and as comfortable to carry if not more so.

I played with the Nighthawk Talon II bobtail and the Ed Brown Kobra Carry.
They both felt GREAT in my hands but a small part of me kinda liked the snakeskin of the Ed Brown more (could have just been as its a new thing to me).

A pro to the Ed Brown is the Snakeskin which seems like it would be less likely to wear and tear clothes (is the Snakeskin type finish something Nighthawk would offer? I know they really try and make things to your specs) A advantage with Nighthawk to me would be that they are more willing to do mods in the shop. I need a short trigger which I know they would install and I also would like to get snakeskin or some type of serrations on the front of the slide (Ed Brown made it clear they wont do either so Nighthawk would save me money with that part of it as I wouldnt have to deal with shipping it again and the extra time away from me in a smiths hands.)

What are the thoughts of some of those of you who own or have owned these pieces?

I will be buying one VERY soon (before New Year) as my primary ccw piece but I really have no clue as to which Id rather own at first (Im sure over time I will have both)

Also, any clue as to weight on them?
I was looking and the Ed Brown says its about 35 oz What about the Talon II with bobtail.

Also, finish... Lots love blue and I can understand as its dark so people think stealth but doesnt stainless wear better? Now the next step would be hard chrome doesnt that wear even better? If so, which gun would be easier to have done in HC (matte) the stainless or the blued version

Many people say these guns are too much go get a full house gun by a quality smith and I do plan on doing that as well BUT 1) Most smiths have wait lists from 1-7 years 2) a true custom is going to run at least 3 grand if not more. I can have and carry one of these within 30 days.

Any help from those with real world experience with both of these would be greatly appreciated!

im not sure, but im in the same boat as you except i want the talon III, with the bobtail, my question is are these guns worth that much more than say a colt or kimber that has been sent out to be reworked????.......scott

Take a look at the Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail, comes Bobtailed with many plus'. I just bought one from Gun Broker for $850. It lists for $1049 and the best dealer price I could find was $977. The pistol is featured in an article in the latest "Guns & Ammo."

I have three EBs. But I have nothing but respect for NightHawk. They are
a quality bunch it seems.

But I will address this right away for a CCW piece. You better forget blued
for a carry piece right now. It looks cool. It looks even cooler when worn.
But if you are a gun-snob (I'm one BTW) who likes to baby (doesn't mean I do) his prized
possessions, bluing on a custom 1911 will just cause you to have a stroke.

You will have much better luck with a stainless EB. Also, if you chrome an
EB it will void the warranty. No worries since many have done it. But there it
is just the same. If I lived in a humid salt-water environment, I would probably
chrome at least one of my Kobras. But rain here in the mid-west is no sweat.
And sweat is no sweat also. :)

Greyson

Thanks for the heads up.
Ed Brown Kobra Carry will be on it's way soon.
Only thing I am going is getting someone to put some snakeskin on the front of the slide and a short trigger.

Someone was recently looking to have cocking scallops on their Kobra.
If you do a search in the EB forum you will see a list of smiths that do
the work, and opinions from members about the need for such work.

Greyson

P.S. Congratulations on the Kobra.
