Hi folks,
I am wondering -- ASSUMING one has decided to carry a 1911 in condition 3 (magazine charged, but no cartridge in chamber) -- is there any reason that the hammer "needs" to be down, vs cocked?
(Note: I understand many folks don't recommend carrying in condition 3, however that's not what I'm asking about!)
The short story is:
* I have decided to carry in condition 3, when I carry, for the time being.
* "Hammer cocked" seems to be the default position in my 1911. I'm not an expert on the platform, and I haven't thought thru logically why this is, but it is. So, at night, when I put my gun away, I take the magazine out, and set it (loaded) next to the gun in my safe (gun has hammer cocked). When I take the gun out to carry, I put the magazine in the gun -- and do not rack the slide -- and then holster the gun. So, the hammer stays cocked.
Anyways, I have read many places that condition 3 means: charged magazine, hammer down, no cartridge in chamber.
Is there any reason the hammer 'needs' to be down to carry safely, with a charged magazine and no cartridge in the chamber? Thanks in advance for any help, I am not a mechanical expert in the 1911 platform and sometimes I don't see every angle of 'gun questions' like this without having them explained to me by more knowledgable folks
