Over the weekend I had an itching to spend a little bit of money. I am very spontaneous, which can be a good and a bad thing, depending on the situation. While I was thinking AR-15, my more responsible half (my girlfriend) pulled me back down to reality, reminding me I have saved my money for a 1911, not an AR. So I decided the next best thing to a firearm, was a book on firearms. After looking at Barnes & Noble through a few books I gravitated towards Combat Shooting by Massad Ayoob.

All I can say is WOW!!!! Why did i not know of this book sooner! I couldn't set it down. The way it is written and put together is almost perfect. I was familiar with Massad and his work, but had never read anything he has done. The book really gets you thinking about why people carry concealed and how large of a responsibility it is. Not to mention the mindset one should have when carrying and the choices we may have to someday face.

I will have this book finished tonight when I'm out of work. Just wanted to see which other books of his any one you may recommend. I know he has written many, just want to see which ones you all think are important reads. Also any other books by other authors would be greatly appreciated. Which books have you learned from and would suggest I pick up?

I have been to several classes from some of the top instructors in the country. However, I have never taken a class from Ayoob, but I would listen to what he has to say. Would I take his word over some of the other instructors out there? No. IMHO, the best thing to do is to take bits and pieces from multiple teachings and formulate your own plan. One thing I wouldn't do, is listen to anything that people who bash others on a forum have to say.

Walter - mine was not in reference to the "he da man" comment but to one of your earlier posts.

And while I've said I think Ayoob is a pompous arrogant ass - he still does possess some useful information.

In my book anyone who blindly follows anyone is an idiot...anyone who refuses to recognize that someone (even those they disagree with) can offer some insight is a total moron!

Ayoob bashing

I have read some of Ayoob's works, and took everything with a grain of salt. I had heard he was "full of himself" but never met him so I reserved judgment.
I then read that he was a 5-gun Master in IDPA, meaning he attained the rank of Master with CDP, ESP, SSP,and two Revolver disciplines. This was impressive to me, since anyone that has 5 Master classifications in IDPA must be a very proficient IDPA competitor......or so I thought.

Two of my friends and I went to an Orlando IDPA match last year at the Central Florida Rifle and Pistol club. All three of us beat Ayoob that day.
Although his scores were respectable, they did not, in my opinion, display the shooting skill of a 5 division Master class shooter. I talked to someone on his squad and asked if he had gun jams or problems, and he said no....his gun ran fine.

Obtaining a Master class card in 5 IDPA gun divisions is not easy, and would make someone think the person is a very credible shooter. If Ayoob really did achieve this, my hat's off to him. If someone helped him to "fudge" the times on the classifiers to be able have credentials of being a multiple Master Class IDPA shooter to help his credibility and career in the firearms industry, we will never know......

He probably wasn't fudging times. Like some other Grandbaggers, he may have shot the classifier, over and over and use the best time for each string. Against the rules, I know, but it's done. If this is what happened, he's not the only one that has done it, to further their career.

I know some M and GM USPSA shooters that shot the "easier" classifiers over and over until they got their M or GM cards. Bad runs never got submitted, etc.
