In the late 1960’s one of my Sgt.’s on the PD had a 1911 which, If I remember correctly, he told me he purchased through the NRA. While I never got to examine it closely, the few times I did see it, it appeared to be in very good condition. He said he paid $17 for it. Can anyone confirm that the NRA or any other organization in the 60’s offered Government Models at that kind of price point? By the way, I offered him his money back for the pistol which he declined.

A side story, I once relieved him on an extra job. He was carrying the 45. It was a road job where many trucks were coming in and out creating clouds of dust. In order to protect his pistol it was wrapped in plastic and in his holster. Fortunately road jobs directing traffic were not too risky. If he’d had to draw it, it would have been slow indeed. Maybe that’s why it was in such good shape.

Here's one I used to have that came from the DCM. Per the invoice dated 10/31/1960, price was $17.00. This was a late war RR in excellent condition. Probably should have kept it, but I'm not very good at keeping guns.

Here's another from 1966 for $17.00 I found on a google search. It was actually $14.15. Packing & Handling was $2.85.;)

Mine also says the "cost" is $17.00; $12.50 for the gun, and $4.50 postage and handling, but the total amount paid for the gun was $54.70; no explanation or itemization of the difference..
The other, similar Benicia Arsenal document in the other thread is the same.

M1 Carbine shipped in '64, says "unit price" $20, but there may have been some "ups and extras" as with the .45.

Compare that to the $87.50 my dad paid for a brand-new Colt Government Model back in 1966. A surplus .45 for $17 would've been a terrific bargain even in 1960s money.
