War era BHP's have machine marks all over them. Almost like they were sanded hard with 100 grit sandpaper before they were blued. (Polishing them for the field was a waste of time)

And the serial numbers and etc on the slide and frame will all be quite sharp and deep.

So when you see shallow stampings with rounded edges, and a nice smooth finish,... you know it's been re-finished.
