Gov./Commander drop in grip safety differences

I noticed that whoever offers drop in grip safeties for the full size 1911 has a choice for the Gov't or the Commander. Looking at them and knowing the same size grips fit on both, what is the difference physically between the two grip safties? Why the choice? Is it just the beavertail grip safeties that must be different, or is it some other spec.?

It's a difference in the way the tangs are cut on the Commander versus a Government model that account for differences in the two types of safeties. The Commander has shorter tangs than does a Government model. If you put a Wilson drop-in beavertail for a Government on a Commander, you will an unsightly gap between the beavertail and the frame tang. Also, I believe that all newer Colt's with the pseudo high-cut front strap also require the Commander size drop in safety. I ordered a Government sized drop in safety for a 5" Colt 38 Super with the high-cut front strap (i.e. an "enhanced" model) and had a huge gap between the frame tangs and grip safety. I sent it back and got a Commander sized safety and it fits fine.

Fits fine but there is still probably a gap right? there are NO drop ins that wont leave a gap of some sort. Fine for some but any gap is unsightly to others...me being one. Not trying to flame, but after a while anything that's not fit perfectly, bugs the hell outta me. I had a smith do a partial blend of a BT to my GI so I didn't have to do a full refinish. With that said, after a month I couldn't even take the partial blend as it seemed unfinished (bare in mind it was a great partial blend just not full and complete) I ended up sending her in to SA for the finishing touch with a couple other mods and got the full refinish for cheap (love park'd for that reason too) and now I am one satisfied dude.

DevilDave1911,

Yes, there is still a gap.....but not the 1/8" (or larger) gap that was there when the incorrect Wilson drop-in grip safety was installed. As you said, drop-ins will always have a gap. Some brands have larger gaps than others. I was just trying to explain the differences between the two types of Wilson drop-in grip safeties, not trying to imply that the fit was the same as as gunsmith fit part where cutting and blending is required. Personally, I don't care much for the looks of most drop-ins. But for a gun that I didn't want to cut the frame on, the Wilson was acceptable for me. I would refer MondoCane to the Colt forum to look at some of DHart's picture of his Colts with Wilson drop in beavertails to see if he could be happy with something of that nature. There's always the option for a gunsmith installed beavertail if he wants to do that.

Wilson's Drop in BT isn't exactly "Drop In", it took a little bit of file and stone work.

There's a 1/8" gap on my Champion... But... I didn't want a BT, I just wanted to find out how much of the Recoil it would take away and if it would cure my problem with hitting 8" low at 7 yards, still hits low, but the recoil is more manageable, may switch it out from time to time.

Eventually I'll have a S&A BT put on, and give the Wilson to a friend who is a cheap skate, but wants a BT.
