I was at the range New Year's Day 2025 and took along a couple of my long time favorite Ruger MKII's. I've had both of these for well over 20 years and they have proven to be very accurate and 100% reliable. That is until this range session.
At the range I pulled out of my range bag an unopened box of Herter's Target 36 grain plated hollow point in a 500 bulk box that I'd bought earlier in the year. The box says it is made in the USA but I found right off the bat that it was out of spec. While chambering the first round in the MKII 22/45 TARGET model I could readily tell it was tight going into the chamber. Sure enough, about every other round hung up during extraction so I changed magazines and experienced the same thing.
I had loaded up two magazines for my other Ruger pistol, a MKII with a PACLITE upper that is probably my most oft used .22 pistol. The first round chambered easy enough but sure enough about every other round hung up on extraction. I was able to finally shoot all the Herter's ammo out of the four magazines and reached into my bag and brought out some CCI Min Mags and some Remington bulk Thunderbolts and reloaded the four magazines and fired all 40 rounds without a single problem. I closed up the box of Herter's and finished my range session with the bulk Thunderbolts without a single issue.
Was wondering if anyone else had ever used the Herter's Target ammo?
